A Year of Reviews - In Review...

It's been more than a year since I started doing product reviews on Acting Balanced, but I thought I'd take a stroll down memory lane and list a few of my top picks from this year's reviews:

Top Mommy On the Go Product:

Be Safe this New Years Eve

One of Wayne's good friends and colleagues spent this holiday grieving the loss of her 19 year old son after he died November 12th of Alcohol Poisoning after drinking in his own home.  With more than 3 times the legal limit of blood alcohol, the young man was found unresponsive in his bed by a roommate and a promising athlete, son, scholar and friend was gone... you can read more about Tyler and his family's story here.

According to the Mayo Clinic Definition of Alcohol Poisoning, binge drinking - downing 5 or more drinks in a row - is the primary cause of Alcohol Poisoning.

Alcohol poisoning symptoms include:

Five Question Friday from @5crookedhalos #5QF

It's Friday again... so I'll take the time to open up my brain and share the answers to these five questions posed by:

1. What's the oldest piece of clothing in your closet?

Friday Fragments

Wow - it feels weird to be writing this FF post on Friday... normally I write it Thursday night, but I actually went out for dinner and a movie with a friend instead of doing this during it's normally scheduled time.  It was my second night out in a row without kids... whodathunk that could ever happen...but I liked it...

Yesterday Hubby and I had date night - a little shopping and dinner out... it was nice not having to lug a diaper bag, toys, sippy cups and other kid paraphernalia into the restaurant!  And adult converations!

I love being able to get a sneak peek at new products - it's one of the reasons I'm a review blogger, but darn is it ever hard to try out a great new product and then have to wait over two weeks to get my hands on more!  It's doubly difficult when I haven't been able to hoard the product all to myself and ration it until it makes it's national debut...

Amy's Light and Lean Meals for the New Year

Now that Christmas is over, I am really trying to eat lighter and healthier.  I don't make new year's resolutions, but I know just how much I've indulged - the cookies, the turkey, the stuffing, the pies... too much!

I've had a chance to test out 5 new Amy's Lean and Light Meals over the past few days and I'm happy to say that Light and Lean does not mean flavorless!

Best of 2011 Giveaway Hop December 27th - 31st

When I looked through all of my reviews in 2011, and thought about what I had read, the first thing that came to mind was Dale Mayer's work that I reviewed this past fall - Tuesday's Child and Hide'N Go Seek, so I approached her about offering a giveaway of BOTH as EBOOKS and she agreed!

And it's the perfect time to read Tuesday's Child and HideN' Go Seek, because the third book in the series  (Maddy's Floor) will be out next month! I've seen a sneak peek of the cover and I'm really excited!

Here are the publisher's blurbs of both books you will win:

My Top 5 Things to Shop for at After Christmas Sales

In Canada we call it Boxing Day - after the  British tradition of the wealthy trading places with their servants who had worked on Christmas Day, and also when they 'boxed up' leftovers and gently used items to share with those less fortunate... but in reality the day after Christmas has become synonymous with shopping for sales!

So what do I buy at After Christmas Sales?

MMMmonday - Leftover Turkey Lettucew Wraps with Cranberry Vinaigrette

One of the things I love most about the holidays is leftovers! And this is a fabulous way to make use of your leftover cranberry sauce and leftover turkey!

25 Days of Cookies Day 25 - Pineapple Cookies

These may not seem like a typical Christmas cookie - and they're not - but they are what my hubby requested, and I figure that you're all baked out anyway, what with it being Christmas Day and all... so here's another yummy cookie recipe!

Pineapple Cookies

25 Days of Christmas Cookies Day 24 - Benne Wafers

I can't host a blog in South Carolina without sharing the traditional cookie of the Lowcountry - Benne Wafers - Benne is an African word for Sesame and they're sold all over Charleston in a variety of flavors and recipes, but this one is a fairly traditional take on these nutty little cookies.

25 Days of Cookies Day 23 - Macadamia Coconut Icebox Cookies

I got to try these at a cookie exchange a few years ago - and fell in love - luckily the recipe came with the cookies so I've been able to make them again whenever I wanted to!

Holiday Gift Guide Review: My Friendship Bracelet Maker

One of the things I struggle with as a mom is teaching my kids to give of themselves rather than always buying gifts... my family and I have made gifts for each other over the years and I have to say that the homemade gifts are the ones I'll treasure most...

Robyn has taken the handmade spirit to heart and this year, with the help of her new Friendship Bracelet maker from http://www.myfbm.com, has been busy creating fabulous one of a kind friendship bracelets for family and friends!

Friday Fragments

NORAD Tracks Santa!

One of the traditions that I remember from childhood was listening to the radio on the way home from my Oma's house on Christmas Eve, driving around somewhat aimlessly with my whole family looking at Christmas lights and waiting for the NORAD Tracks Santa updates... well when Robyn came into our lives, NORAD was getting more sophisticated and we could 'watch' Santa on the internet, although it was kinda slow, since we were still on dial up.

Now, with more integration from google earth, mobile options, Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus, all my children will be able to keep up with Santa on his around the world journey!   Here's a little snippet of what happened last year:

DVD G1VEAWAY: WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? (US only)

You can be one of the first to own the romantic comedy What's Your Number on DVD as Acting Balanced starts the New Year off right and offers you this fabulous giveaway in conjunction with Thinkjam!

About the movie:

Ring in the New Year with a fresh and funny tale about dating, relationships and life as Anna Faris (Scary Movie Franchise, The House Bunny) and Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Captain America) come together in a hilarious quest for “the one” in WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? Unrated Ex-tended Cut, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD January 10 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

After reading a magazine article that insists if a woman has slept with at least 20 people that they have already missed Mr. Right, marketing executive Ally Darling (Anna Faris) begins to panic, thinking that she will be alone forever. With the help of her hunky new neighbor (Chris Evans), Ally starts tracking down all her ex-boyfriends, hoping to find her real true love while she helps him escape his latest fling. Hilarious hijinks and adventure ensues as Ally goes on her wild search for the best “ex” of her life, only to find what she is looking has been right in front of her all along.

Featuring hysterical supporting performances from Chris Pratt (Moneyball, “Parks and Recreation”), Joel McHale (“The Soup,” “Community”) and Andy Samberg (“Saturday Night Live,” Hot Rod), WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? is based on the book “20 times a Lady” by Karen Bosnak and will be available as a Blu-ray combo pack and single disc DVD.

25 Days of Cookies Day 22 - White Chocolate Cranberry Orange Biscotti

Biscotti take a little more time to bake than other cookies, but not really much more work!  These delectable cookies can be made without dipping them in the chocolate, but why would you?  Since white chocolate is the one kind I can eat, I often indulge this way...

Gift Cards- Not Just a Last Minute Gift Idea #GiftCardsRock

Several members of my family always said that giving gift cards was a cop out... you weren't really trying to get a gift that reflected your affection for a person.  Me, I'm all about making sure that my gift is appropriate and when I come to people that I don't know as well as I'd like or that are truly hard to buy for, Gift Cards are the answer and I'm not ashamed to buy them, but there are creative ways to present gift cards that help bridge that gap and show people that you didn't just stop off and pick the first card available...
Pair the gift card with something fun!

25 Days of Cookies Day 21 - Chow Mein Chews

These are truly simple cookies that require no baking at all and they get rave reviews!  You can even melt the chips in the microwave!

Guest Post: Teaching Your Children About Money Matters

I am pleased to invite Vanessa Lang to guest post on Acting Balanced today:

Teaching Your Children About Money Matters

One of the most important lessons you can teach your children is how to properly manage their money. This has to start from the moment they learn to count. If they learn about money, the importance of saving, and how to spend wisely early in life, they will have a better chance of making the right financial decisions when they are older.

25 Days of Cookies Day 20 - Nutmeg Ginger Apple Snaps

I found these cookies on one of my good friend Heather's blog - Out Of The Box and Into The Kitchen and she had found them (and the yummy looking picture below) at the Vancouver Observer

PartyLite for the New Year

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of PartyLite Simple Pleasures Holiday Sweepstakes for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

When I got married several years ago, instead of a traditional shower, one of my friends knew how important candles were going to be to my wedding and threw me a PartyLite party where I got the hostess credits and a ton of free candles that I used for my wedding!  With royal blue and white as my colors, I used a variety of pillar candles, tapers and votives - all from PartyLite!

I've now got the opportunity to check out PartyLite and win again with the PartyLite Simple Pleasures Holiday Sweepstakes

Clearly Creative Garden Holder

I've followed PartyLite for years, but I haven't been to a party since moving to South Carolina... which surprises me!  I know that all of the parties I attended or hosted when I lived in Canada or Pennsylvania were a huge success and the hostess credits and gifts were fabulous!  The candles themselves are such a high quality product and the scents are out of this world!

Maybe in the new year I'll be able to find time to host my own PartyLite party.  Now that the Winter/Spring catalog is out I can figure out exactly how much hostess credit I'll need to make to get everything I want for free... since just adding some new candles and holders can change the decor of a room dramatically and I'm ready for a change!

One of the best ways to stay on top of all the PartyLite news is the follow them on the PartyLite Facebook pge!

25 Days of Cookies Day 18 - Apple Chai Oatmeal Cookies

I found this recipe a while back on the Oregon Chai website and fell in love!  They have what I consider to be all of the yummiest holiday flavors - Apple, Oatmeal and Spice!  For me, I omit the chocolate chips and the nuts so Wayne and I can both eat them... for the holidays I add dried cranberries in place of the raisins.

Five Question Friday #5QF @5crookedhalos

It's that time of the week again... where you can peek into my brain based on the questions asked at:

1. What's the best Christmas present you've ever received?

Friday Fragments

Wow... another Friday ... wasn't it just yesterday that I posted FF?

I think the combination of being sick (head cold) and sleep deprived (1 year old has same head cold - and teething) has finally rotted what little balance I could act upon... I'm just about ready for Christmas - just have to do a few more little shops and start wrapping... but I have yet to find that holiday spirit...

It might have something to do with the fact that it was 77 degrees in the shade today... I don't think I have any hope for a white Christmas here in SC... unless you count the beautiful white sandy beaches...

Wayne was wonderful and took a day off to help me get things in order despite being incredibly busy at work... I'd honestly let the house get bad and he worked tirelessly to help me get it into reasonable shape!  He also played with Erik so I could do some extra work...

I'm still taking suggestions for cookie recipes for the 25 Days of Cookies - just visit the facebook page and vote here.  If you haven't checked out all the recipes, you can head here and check out yesterday's recipe and  the linky list of yummy cookies (add your own if you'd like! - the linky is open)

It's the kids last day of school for the year!  Liam is going to go a little squirrelly without school - luckily Nana and Papa arrived today and will be able to hang out with all of the kids!  Robyn has a dance today - should be interesting, since the kids have a choice between the dance and watching a movie - all the girls are planning to dress up because they can... and all the guys seem to be heading to the movies... gotta love middle school :)

On top of everything else going on with Erik ... he's trying to drop his naps... yes - he's only 14 months old - I'm not ready for him to drop one nap, let alone both... he's just so interested in everything going on around him... I need the two hours to get things done though!

Well, to be honest I'm all fragged out... and really sleepy, so I'm going to let you loose on Mrs. 4444's other fragmented friends by clicking on the link below:

Here's what he had to say about it all:

25 Days of Cookies Day 15 - Crushed Peppermint Snowballs

One of things I hate to do is waste, so when the kids bring home their Christmas gifts from the little parties and they've got broken candy canes attached, I often bake with them.  I love finding quick and easy recipes so I thought I'd share another recipe from the Ultimate Cake Mix Cookie Book that I reviewed here

These cookies are good all winter long - and if you don't have enough broken candy canes, the perfect time to stock up on them is at the after Christmas sales!

25 Days of Cookies Day 13 - Super Easy Peanut Butter Cookies

Super Easy Peanut Butter Cookies

1 cup Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg

HEAT oven to 325°F.

MIX all ingredients with large spoon until well blended.

ROLL into 24 balls; place, 4 inches apart, on baking sheets. Flatten with fork.

BAKE 20 min. or until lightly browned. (Do not overbake.) Cool 5 min. on baking sheets; transfer to wire racks. Cool completely.

Christmas Candy & Drinks for after the Christmas Play with #MurphyUSA and #CBias

Thursday night is the annual Christmas Play at Robyn's school - they're performing "The Christmas Angel" and while Robyn doesn't have a role in this year's production, we're heading out to be part of the audience and support several of her good friends who will be acting their hearts out!

On my way home from picking up Wayne from the bus stop, I stopped for gas at Murphy USA and while I was there, an idea struck - I had some frozen cookie dough that I could use to make some yummy treats for Thursday night!  On top of that, a few people wanted some instructions about the Stained Glass Cookie recipe I posted, so I went looking for some hard candy to take some frustration out on - you can check out my whole shop and some more baking pics in my Google+ Album

Holiday Gift Guide Review&Giveaway: Caillou for your preschooler

Caillou has been around our home on TV since Robyn was little.  In Canada we had the opportunity to watch Caillou in both English and French, and Robyn used to get Caillou stories out of the library too!  I was pleased to find Caillou available here in the US on PBS so that I can share his world with Erik and Liam too!  Even more exciting is that Caillou has expanded beyond the two dimensional world of TV and books and is now available to play with!

Caillou is a preschooler who delights in the small wonders of the world around him, embellishing everything he sees with his rich imagination. With a focus on role-playing and make-believe Caillou toys and games help spruce up reality with a healthy dose of imagination so kids will be inspired to make up adventures of their own.

I received three different toys for the boys to play with and one of my lucky US readers will win the same set of three great toys (and they should arrive before Christmas!)  The set includes the Fireman's HouseClassic 14.5 inch Caillou Doll and the boys personal favorite- the Learning Train!

Partying with Hickory Farms this Holiday Season

There are a few traditions that I've come to love since moving here to the US and one of them is seeing the Hickory Farms Kiosk go up in the Citadel Mall right near where Santa is... they always have the yummiest treats to sample and I always pick up one or two great gifts from them every year....
But this year, I got a gift!  Hickory Farms sent me all kinds of treats to throw a house party and share with my friends - and I got to share just how easy it is to order Hickory Farms gifts online and pay just $3 for shipping:
