Five Question Friday from @5crookedhalos #5QF

It's that time again... to peek inside my mind and see if you like what I have to say...

1. Do you apologize to your kids if you're wrong?

I'm never wrong... lol... yep, I apologize if I'm wrong or angry

2. Do you have a class ring, letterman's jacket, or similar obscenely priced high school "must have"?

nope

3. If you could be one age for the rest of your life, what age would you choose?

35

4. What is your favorite (unused) baby name?

I always wanted a little girl named Ursula Anne... but when I shared it with family they didn't like it... but I still think it's pretty

5. If you could make your child like something what would it be?

Robyn - chores - but I can't complain, I hate them too

Liam - trying new foods - with his sensory issues he has trouble even wanting to get near certain foods let alone put them in his mouth

Erik - I wish I could make him like being a baby - he's always chasing after his siblings and wanting to be a 'big boy' but I like having a baby in the house...

Well, whether you like them or not, there are my answers... and if you want to see more .. just visit:

Friday Fragments

Friday has snuck up on me this week... it all passed in a blur.  Does that happen to you?

Stop the ride, I want off...

And it hasn't even been that stressful a week... just different.

Erik is still trying to cut some more teeth, so he's been kinda miserable - but I don't blame him ... it's just par for the course... but as my mom said today... He's really a little divil...

I got a Halloween costume for him on clearance last year which I'm sure will fit... it's an adorable little spider - which would go so well with his sister's vampire princess look (all decked out with spiders and goth accents) but today I was struck by the idea that he really should channel is inner personality trait and go as Bam-Bam Rubble... I just don't know about letting him lose with a club, lol

As I mentioned... Robyn has decided to go as a vampire princess...should be fun!  Anyone have an experience with comfortable fangs?    I am trying to figure out what kind to get her...

Liam, I have no idea what to do with him... I know he gets the concept of Halloween but hates costumes so maybe I'll pull out the old stand-by and make him a skeleton in one of those glow in the dark tops and a pair of track pants....

I'm going to be going as... a witch... it's tradition... I buy myself a new hat every year to change things up but have been wearing the same dress for years :-) I asked Robyn if I should change and she looked horrified ... so a witch it is... apparently it's the one day of the year I can show my true nature ;-)

Wayne on the other hand is working way too hard... we've barely seen him all week.  Hoping he catches a break soon... I miss him!

anyway, I'm getting really sleepy so I'm heading off to bed... while I sleep you can check out all the other great fragmented lives at:
Mommy's Idea

Review: Eucerin Plus Essentials

Transitions between seasons seem to be hard on my skin and I often find myself in situations where I get very dry skin which ends up getting very itchy.  I made it worse this weekend by getting too much sun on my back because I didn't get any sunscreen on it and now if I go to long without putting something on it after my shower, the itch is almost all consuming!

Dream Big with UPromise!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of UPromise for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

UPromise is celebrating their 10th anniversary with a contest about achieving dreams... and giving away $20,000 in the process!  Visit www.upromisetodream.com [to submit your dream - it is easy to do - except for the part about trying to fit it all into 700 characters (and  the rest of the dream wall official rules)

tag_5502_placeholder]

I submitted my dream for Liam because he's my child who will face the toughest road educationally

My dream is that all of my children exceed their expectations. With my daughter and one son, I can see that they'll strive to make it to the top of their chosen field, but I worry that my middle son won't have the same opportunities as his siblings, because he has Autism,
I have hope because of new programs and innovations that are inviting children like mine to get a college education -except they don't qualify for student loans or grants because their program is modified...
I dream that my son will learn to use his disability to see the world differently and have the education to turn it on it's head! I want him to have the opportunity to go to college and beyond.

I always knew that I'd be an advocate for my children's education, but I never thought that I'd get as much of an education as my son!  I've learned so much about Autism and I've barely scratched the surface, but I can dream big because I see progress every day!

What is your dream for your kids?  Are you using UPromise to save for that dream?  They've helped families by providing more than 600 million dollars in college savings - if you aren't a UPromise member you should submit your dream and register for UPromise at the same time!

Untitled Jersey City Project Sneak Peak

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Untitled Jersey City Project for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you heard of the Untitled Jersey City Project?

UNT_091311_Title_bmb_v01.ai (1 page)

It's a whole new concept in television that they're calling a work-in-progress television drama.  I watched the brief clip below and I can tell you that it makes me think Sopranos meets the Jersey new wave of industrial high roller - the real estate speculator... with all the inherent power, money and corruption that can ensue!

And of course there will be betrayal, sex and more power up for grabs, because it makes for good tv.  Heck, in the 30 second clip you get to see power brokers, mafia hit men and a little heavy petting in the front seat of a car - what's not to look forward to?

Who will win the power game - the old guard, the new money or someone who doesn't even know it yet?  It makes for a lively and promising start to this year's Fall TV season, don't you think?

Is this the type of drama you are looking for on TV this season?  What do you think of the video?  The concept? The actors? The storyline? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below after checking out the video!

I never whine over @FlipFlopWines... and I won't start with the Moscato

... and I won't start with the Moscato

Once again I have been offered the opportunity to review a bottle of Flip Flop Wine - this time it was a bottle of their Moscato, which is a lightly floral, sweet wine from California.  My parents are in town, so I thought it was a good time to get their opinions on the wine.  My dad who is a die-hard full bodied red kind of guy liked it for it's dessert possibilities - with a sharp cheese and some apple pie... my mom, on the other hand is finishing off the bottle - she's definitely a sweet white wine connoisseur.

I'm somewhere in the middle - I rarely meet a wine that I don't like.  And I really liked this Moscato as something I'd share around the pool or on the deck with the girls and some yummy spicy appetizers.  I think for me it's too sweet to be a dinner wine, but it definitely gets high marks as a dessert or sipping wine!

How Active Are You In Your Child's School?

This article is being written as an answer to the Social Moms Daily Writing Prompt:

How active are you in your child's school? -    Are you apart of the PTA? Do you like to help out with school events? How do you motivate others to be more activity.

When my daughter started school I got asked how I'd like to be involved in her education.  At the time I was working full time so my options were somewhat limited, so I volunteered to help coordinate fund raising efforts and help out on field trips.  When I had the opportunity to stay home when we moved to the US, I expanded my volunteering but have purposely stayed out of the children's direct domains...

MMMmonday - Mushroom Stew

Even though it's still pretty darn warm here in Charleston, I've been craving comfort food and for me - that's stew, so I made up a big pot of this yummy vegetarian stew and pretended it was chilly outside...

Mushroom Stew

1/2 oz (14 g) dried porcini mushrooms
1 cup (250 ml) hot water
4 Tbs (60 ml) butter or olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2-4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2-3 lbs (900-1350 g) assorted fresh mushrooms such as crimini, portobello, oyster, shiitake, or white button, trimmed and coarsely chopped
1 tsp (5 ml) chopped fresh sage
1 tsp (5 ml) chopped fresh rosemary
1 tsp (5 ml) chopped fresh thyme
1/4 cup (60 ml) dry sherry, Marsala, or Madeira (optional) and I usually omit
1 can (14 1/2 oz, 411 g) chopped tomatoes, drained
1 tsp (5 ml) balsamic vinegar
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Soak the dried mushrooms in the hot water until tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

Drain and strain the liquid through a paper towel or coffee filter and set aside.
Chop the mushrooms and set aside.
Heat the butter in a heavy pot over moderate heat and saute the onion and garlic until tender but not brown, about 5 minutes.
Add the mushrooms and saute until most of the liquid they release has evaporated, about 10 minutes.
Add the remaining ingredients and the reserved soaking liquid and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
Garnish with chopped parsley. Serves 4 to 6.

Five Question Friday from @5crookedhalos #5QF

Because I know that you desperately want to know more about me..

1. Dream job...realistic and completely unrealistic.

realistic - I'm doing it... Never-stay-at-home Mom
unrealistic - CEO of a mega-super wonderful shopping chain.

2. Do you fart in front of your significant other?

I don't think there's anything I don't do in front of my hubby... he loves me warts, farts and all.

3. What's the furthest you've ever traveled from home? How far and where was it?

The other side of North America - went to Cali for a business trip ... I think it's about 3000 miles...

4. How do you celebrate birthday for your kids? Family only or friends? ... Alternate for those without kiddos: How did you celebrate birthdays as a kid?

Usually a friends party since family is too far to visit.

5. Fave thing about fall?

In Ontario where I'm from it's the combination of crisp air and crackling leaves under my feet... but here in SC it's the end of the Hurricane Season!

Now that you know more about me, answer one or more of  the questions in the comments or hook up with:

Book Review: Seven by Paige Agnew

I first met Paige Agnew as a writer when I read her first book, Starless Sky, which was a somewhat sweet but emotional book about dealing with loss and life as a teenager.  In her second book, Seven, she explodes away from sweetness with a ferocity that is almost startling.  Seven is definitely a completely different entity and a much more psychological read.

Winner announcement and ending soon!

Congratulations to Patricia, entry #285, who won the Kidtoons September Prize Pack which included the Sid the Science Kid and Pokoyo swag!   I hope she enjoys it!

There are so many great giveaways to enter - you can't win if you don't enter:

And don't forget that the RAFFLECOPTER ROUND- UP and Fall Follower Giveaway Hop both have hundreds of other great blogs with fabulous prizes available!

#Giveaway and Review: Alphabeasts

I love finding quirky and personalized toys and so when I was approached by Alphabeasts to do a review, I immediately checked out these funky new toys and chose the one I thought was the cutest for one of my kids!  I chose to get an Alphabeast for Erik - and one lucky Acting Balanced reader will win one too!

#C2Play2Day Playing Outdoors with our Family - taking every opportunity!

Getting out is one of the best ways to spend family time!  We purposely leave the technology at home and focus on playing with the kids and getting fresh air!  No matter where we go, whether it's to the beach, county park our just out on our own front lawn there's something freeing about just being out in the sun (or the rain)

I have to say that the further afield we go, the more preparation goes into our outdoor adventures so I love it when we can all just congregate with a ball or two and the our aerobie sprint ring in the empty lot next door!  It's great to watch the kids skills develop - Robyn is playing middle school soccer, so she's helping to teach Liam to dribble the ball with his feet and everyone is encouraging Erik to throw and chase the ball!

Wayne grew up on the baseball diamond and loves to play catch with the kids despite the fact that so far none of our kids have picked baseball up as a sport - there's still hope for Erik and Liam for that matter - they're young yet.

Sometimes though. you just have to seize an opportunity that presents itself - last weekend Wayne got asked by some of his students from C of C to go and watch their Cross Country team race at a nearby private park - so we packed up the boys early on Saturday morning and while we were waiting for the runners to go by, the boys enjoyed the opportunity to explore the new environment - they got to run, chase daddy and we even got to check out some pretty big pine cones (which I snagged for crafts later) and it was great to get out!

Liam's favorite thing to do is to head to one of the local playgrounds - he's a swinging and sliding machine!  Erik is starting to follow in his big brother's footprints - he's a real swinger too!

I never really worry about whether the kids get dirty - it's only clothes and skin, right?  And there's always Clorox 2 to take the stains out!  Speaking of Clorox 2, they've launched http://clorox2play2day.com and are encouraging everyone to take the pledge to play outside!  I've taken the pledge to play outside with my family - will you?  Not only will you be pledging to take your family out, but also registering to WIN great prizes!

About Clorox2® Stain Fighter & Color Booster:
Getting dirty is much more fun when it's easy to get clean. When the outdoor fun is finished, Clorox2® Stain Fighter & Color Booster gets out the tough stains, so your kids can take part in healthy fun and get dirty over and over again.
