Friday Fragments

Well it's been a very busy blog week for me - the Autism Awareness Month event kicks off today, and getting that running and doing almost 15 reviews has been busy.  I've also started receiving products for my Moms Month reviews and I just put up my June Traveling with Kids pitch today, which has caused another flood of fabulous emails.  This translates into one messy house, but also a great deal of fun for all of you AB readers!

One of the things I'm most proud of is that I have several fellow bloggers who've agreed to contribute posts this month, so I'll get to showcase all of them (including FF's organizer Mrs. 4444)

As for the kids, they're running me ragged - Liam didn't go to bed until almost midnight last night and Erik was up at 2:30 and 3:00 which makes for a long night for mommy.  I did get a wonderful night's sleep Tuesday though when Wayne did the overnight duty for me and let me sleep from 11 - 7, darn that felt good!

I've also discovered the benefit of twitter hashtags, I never really paid attention before, but I've found some great #Autism resources by using the hashtag!

Our whole family is wearing blue today and tomorrow to LIGHT IT UP BLUE for AUTISM - I'll also be posting pics of our 'blue palm' once I get the lights up later today!

I've also got a Light It Up Blue fundraising page at:
where you can support Autism Speaks with a financial donation!
I am hoping to raise $250 for Autism Speaks this month through that portal,
so if you can, please give!

Well, Erik is asleep and Liam needs to be, so I'm going to cut my frags there... and wish you all a happy Friday!

Don't forget to pop over to check out the rest of the fraggers at:
Mommy's Idea

Five Question Friday

Just because I know you want to know more about me, I'm hooking up with Five Question Friday!

1. Have you ever had surgery?

Yep, three times... tonsillectomy when I was 10, Wisdom teeth out when I was 18, and a c-section when Erik was born.

2. Ever ride in an ambulance?

Yep to this one too... I fell down a flight of stairs and banged my leg up pretty good in the subway one winter in Toronto which earned me a free ride...

3. How are you in a medical emergency? Panicked? Calm?

I'm the calm one - as long as I have something to do - usually rational too...

4. Do you have a garden? Flowers or veggies?

I have container gardens - roses, annuals and veggies

5. When did you move out of your parents house?

Officially, when I got married, but I kinda moved in with my fiancĂ© and his family 90% of the time about a year before we tied the knot.

The Unofficial start to my #Autism Awareness Month event

Tomorrow is the official start to Autism Awareness month on Acting Balanced, but I just wanted to share a few things today!

First off, I wanted to let each and every one of you know how thankful I am that you're reading this post - if you know someone who has been touched by Autism, please share my link with them, and even if you've only been touched by it peripherally, please know that I am organizing this month to

  • spread the word about Autism,
  • about companies who are participating by sponsoring Autism Speaks or other organizations
  • about families and caregivers who are dealing with Autism on a daily basis
  • celebrate people with Autism
  • share a variety of perspectives on research, treatment and support systems
I decided at the outset that I would allow perspectives and options to be showcased whether I personally understand it or not.  Each guest post is written from the individuals' perspective and may not match mine or yours.  I think debate and research is key to gaining more understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders, but please be polite and respectful.

I also wanted to let you know about
LIGHT IT UP BLUE -
which is a campaign by Autism Speaks to generate awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
You can get more information about it at http://www.lightitupblue.org/

My family will all be wearing blue tomorrow and Saturday!

I also plan to light up our Palm Tree blue tomorrow and Saturday night!

The third thing I've done is started a Light It Up Blue fundraising page at: http://blue.autismspeaks.org/mysite/actingbalanced
where you can support Autism Speaks with a financial donation!

I am hoping to raise $250 for Autism Speaks this month through that portal, so if you can, please give!

Please grab my button from the sidebar ---- ) and display it on your blogroll or write a post about it if you can!

Finally, I've recently found another blogger who is also hosting a month long event on her blog at: http://manyhatsmommy.com/ - please stop by and show her some bloggy love for her event too!

If you are hosting an event or even just writing a post about Autism this month, please let me know here in the comments or by emailing me the URL to heather@actingbalanced.com

Book Review: Lowcountry Summer by Dorthea Benton Frank

As a Come'yon (come from yonder/not from here originally) to the Low Country, one of the first things I was told was that if I wanted to read books with true Low Country flavor, I had to pick up books by Dorthea Benton Frank.  I've now read several of her books, including Bulls Island and Sullivan's Island.  I haven't read the prequel to Lowcountry Summer, Plantation, but now that I've read Lowcountry Summer, it's on my reading list!

Thirsty For Comments Thursday - link your fave posts

Acting Balanced

Welcome to the Thirsty for Comments Thursday blog hop!

I want new Outdoor Furniture!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Pier 1 for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

We've been living in our house for 3 and a half years now and every spring we say the same thing - it's time to make use of our beautiful deck and make it part of our home with some beautiful outdoor furniture!  I've been drooling over Pier 1's latest collection of outdoor furniture and decor!

The beauty of Pier 1's collection is that not only is it beautiful for out on our deck, but it also can be just as at home in our living room or lounge!  Everything coordinates, too - from the rugs to the seating and even the decor - pillows, wall art and more!  You don't have to be a designer to get a designer look and Pier 1 is always so reasonably priced!

One of my favorite pieces this spring is the Swingasan - an update to their classic Papasan and something that I can see cuddling up with the kids in while enjoying this beautiful Carolina spring!

Another piece that I love, and would be perfect for outdoor entertaining is the Coco Cove Outdoor Swivel Chair - and the Coco Cove End table ... actually all of the Coco Cove pieces would look fabulous on my deck, especially with the indoor/outdoor flatweave rug and a jaunty striped umbrellla!

Another great deal that I found on the Pier 1 website is that they have cushions on sale!  So once my Coco Cove pieces arrive, I can deck them out for even more style and comfort with great cushion accents!

While I'm drooling over all of the fabulous outdoor looks, I'm also hugely jealous of all of my readers in the Atlanta and New York areas who can go and hang out at their local Pier One stores and participate in Pier 1 Tweetups that are coming up April 5th (Altlanta) and April 20th (NYC).  Even if I can't be at a Pier 1 Tweetup I can still shop Pier 1 online or at my local store to see all of the great outdoor furniture and accessories!

Keeping the Family Happy #FarmRichSnacks

As a never-stay-at-home mom my kids have an expectation that we don't spend too much time at home.  Even if  we don't have anything planned on a weekend, they know that it's truly rare that we don't pack up and do something.  Some of our favorite things to do to keep our family happy include packing up and heading to the park, stopping by the bookstore for a prowl or just going for a drive.

We try to rotate and do things that each family member enjoys most.

For Liam, he's fascinated by trains and cars, so his favorite place is actually in our local mall - one of the empty stores in the corner of the mall has been transformed by the local model railway club into a little boy's dream- five huge model train sets complete with stores, houses and even little cars and trolleys that run on their own tracks.  One of the largest designs even has interactive buttons all the way down the table so that Liam can push one and make the train whistle, another starts the trolley moving and yet another works a ferris wheel in a State Fair set-up.  The location works out for Robyn, who takes the opportunity to head to her favorite stores while we hang out at 'trains'.

Erik, even at just four months old, is a people watcher.  His ideal trip out is to go anywhere that he can see and interact with lots of people - the park, the mall, just walking on a downtown street - they all make him happy right now.

Robyn, being nearly thirteen, is probably the hardest to please, but she jumps at the opportunity to head out to the bookstore or to drool over the latest Nintendo Wii and DSi games.  She's also a pretty good sport about heading to the local playgrounds and keeping an eye on Liam while playing herself (it's cool to be there as a helper, but not so much as a thirteen year old playing, so she gets the best of both worlds)

Wayne is like Robyn, he likes to head for the bookstore.  It's hard to find the latest book or magazine when you have help, but occasionally he is able to find what he wants... even with a trip to the train table and the teen section.

For me, it's all about getting out of the house and making memories together - I have to say that as much as I love my house, leaving it, even for the few minutes it takes to walk around the block, feels good.  It may take as much planning to walk around the block as it does to go out all day, but it's totally worth it to see my kids walking hand in hand and helping push the stroller.  It's even more fun when they spy a gecko or frog, see a bird flying across their path or even stop to inspect a ladybug.

The one thing that I've found that keeps everyone happy is making sure that we have snacks and drinks in the car so that we all keep our tummies full, without having to scavenge too far.  It also saves the wallet to make sure I've brought things from home.

What do you do to keep your family happy?

Sunday Family Stories on a Tuesday: Easter Morning

When I was growing up Easter was my dad's holiday.  Christmas was all about my mom - the decorations, the tree, the meal, the gifts and shopping - my mom featured heavily in all of it (at least in my mind) but Easter was all about my dad.

We'd wake up Easter morning to a new basket or some other collection device - one year it was a new cereal bowl, another year it was a new mug, but either way - basket or useful collection vessel, it was, for Easter morning the collection vessel of choice for what was my dad's finest hour...

The Easter Bunny had hopped through the house and hid eggs all over the place - behind mom's china ladies - in the nooks and crannies of the china cabinet, behind books, on door jambs... and then in shoes, coat pockets, the refrigerator - everywhere...

What makes that my father's finest hour was that he'd sit in his chair directing us once we'd exhausted the most obvious eggs and were getting frustrated.

"You're getting warmer... colder... warmer... hotter... colder..."  This could go on for what felt like hours, but was probably only fifteen minutes.   And he was very fair - with three of us in the house, he had to be, because we really weren't fair to each other.

Eggs in our house weren't the dyed hardboiled variety, my dad is deathly allergic to eggs, so we always had those yummy foil wrapped solid mini eggs... and they complemented the other goodies that the Easter bunny left - a large hollow egg with our names written on them, a solid milk chocolate rabbit - at least until I discovered they even yummier ones with crispy rice in them and insisted that I wanted that one instead.

If we were really lucky, we'd also have a hand made chocolate confection from the local family owned chocolate shop, Clayton's.  It was the place we'd walk to on a regular basis at Christmas and Easter just to press our noses to the window to check out the fabulous assortment of poured chocolate that was hand decorated with royal icing and all sorts of fabulous accessories.  We dreamed of, but never got, the 5 foot solid bunny that was the centerpiece of the window... but if we were really good, there might be a little duck or other treat.

After our Easter breakfast of chocolate and more chocolate, we were off to church and I'm sure that the Sunday School teachers were glad to see the back end of all of us, since I'm sure we were all on a serious sugar high!

We'd head home for a lunch of chocolate and more chocolate... and then to my grandmother's house for a healthy dinner :)

What did you do for Easter as a child?

Big Event Fundraising - for your school or organization?

As a member of our local PTSA at the middle school, one of the hardest things to do is try to figure out what will give us good return on investment and get the kids and parents motivated to participate in fundraising.  We've done everything from bake sales to raffles, coupon books to cookie dough, and with a school as diverse as ours, it's hard to know just what will sell and what won't.  It's nice to know that there are companies out there who are being innovative and proactive in helping organizations to meet their fundraising needs.

Nutrisystem Review and #Giveaway

I found a great site to get the inside scoop and reviews for as seen on TV products - are they really worth the money you spend?  Do they live up to their claims?  Check them out on TV Top Ten before you buy!  One of the product claims that I regularly see is for Nutrisystem, so when I was asked to review something for TV Top Ten, I thought it would be a great chance to see just what comes to you.

I am not part of a Nutrisystem blogging program, I just received a sample selection of their shelf stable foods for review.

The first thing that I noticed when I opened the kit is that the serving size is much smaller than I usually make for myself - meaning that I can learn from their serving size and make that work in my own diet.  The second thing I did was check for sodium content - and I was right - their shelf stable foods, particularly the dinners were quite high in sodium for the size of the serving.  One of the issues that my family often faces as we age is high blood pressure, and in my quest to avoid that fate I really watch the amount of sodium I allow myself.

I had asked my contact at TV Top Ten to make sure that I could eat everything, so I had requested no chocolate or coffee flavors.

I received 5 items to try:

Pancakes (breakfast)
Macaroni with Beef (dinner)
Chicken and Dumplings (dinner)
Chili with Beans (dinner)
Lemon & Blueberry snack bar (snack)

I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed by my selections.  As I mentioned before, the products, particularly the dinners were quite high in sodium.  There was also a lack of balance in available fruits and vegetables in the meals.
The Chicken and Dumplings meal, while very quick to prepare (just 3 minutes total) had 2 small pieces of carrot, several chewy dumplings that reminded me more of gnocci than dumplings and a few large pieces of chicken in gravy.  I would have loved to have seen more vegetables and less dumplings.

The Macaroni and Cheese with Beef was similar to a cup o'noodles that needed to be reconstituted - this turned me right off and I actually wouldn't eat it.  I have never eaten Kraft Dinner either - powdered cheese isn't really cheese in my book - so this was a definite non-starter for me - again no vegetables to be seen.

My favorite of the dinners was the Chili with Beans - this looked the most like a meal I might make for myself - just a smaller portion, although I would have done things to mitigate the 800 mg of sodium present if I had made it for myself.  This entree also contained the least number of unpronounceable ingredients, so was probably the most appealing for that reason.

The pancakes were okay, and I liked that I could just make 2 pancakes for myself without having to make a whole batch for my family, but I found them sweeter than I normally make and since I only make pancakes on special occasions, I'd probably opt for my homemade ones.

My favorite thing of all was the Lemon Blueberry bar - this was a great snack - filling and flavorful and it was just the right size for an afternoon snack pick me up.

I think that my expectations for the dinners was based on previous experience with frozen or ready-to-eat meals and I was expecting more vegetables - I think that the Nutrisystem program could be something for me to invest in, particularly if I opt for more of the frozen/fresh options rather than the shelf-stable ones, but I think I'm just more of a cook than an eater and since I'd still have to prepare meals for Wayne and the kids, it might not be the long term option for me.

This would be a great plan for someone who is single or very busy, but as a stay-at-home-mom who enjoys finding healthy and yummy recipes and experimenting in the kitchen, I think that this would be a hard program to stick to, if I'm cooking for everyone else.  I think too, that I would need to commit to trying it for a month, rather than just sampling to know for sure whether it would work.   I am really glad I tried it out, just because I could see the serving sizes.

Is Nutrisystem something you've been thinking about trying out?  Want to get a sample kit similar to mine?
The winner for the giveaway will receive the following to try:
  • Black Bean Tortilla Soup
  • Lasagna with Meat Sauce
  • Egg Frittata
  • Apple Granola Bar
  • Fudge Brownie
