As the single father of Scout and Jem, Atticus faces many challenges of parenthood on his own. To celebrate the release of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD on Blu-ray on January 31, we will highlight five other famous and memorable single fathers in film, including Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness and Marlin from Finding Nemo.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)
In the classic film To Kill a Mockingbird, Gregory Peck plays Atticus Finch, the single father to young Scout (Mary Badham) and Jem (Phillip Alford). Through his work as a lawyer defending a wrongfully accused black man, Atticus teaches his children about racism in their small town, and helps them mature over the course of the film.

FINDING NEMO (2003)

After a barracuda kills Marlin’s wife and many of their unborn children, Marlin is left to care for their one surviving son, Nemo, on his own. But when a scuba diver captures Nemo, Marlin goes on a crazy adventure to retrieve his lost son, and, in the process, makes many friends and learns that he doesn’t need to be overly protective to be a good, caring father.

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993)

After losing his wife to cancer, Sam (Tom Hanks) moves himself and his son, Jonah, to Seattle in order to start over. When Jonah calls into a talk radio show to talk about his grieving father, Sam is persuaded to go on air and discuss how much he misses his wife. Annie (Meg Ryan) is listening to the show in Baltimore, and writes to Sam to meet he and Jonah in New York.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS (2006)

In The Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith stars as Chris Gardner, a man who, after a poor business investment is left by his wife. Left homeless and forced to raise his son (played by his real life son, Jaden Smith) alone, Chris is able to find an internship in San Francisco’s Financial District and is ultimately offered a job which allows him to make a better life for he and his son.

MRS. DOUBTFIRE (1993)

When Daniel’s (Robin Williams) wife Miranda (Sally Field) divorces him, he is given limited visitation rights to his children. In order to see his kids more than once a week, Daniel poses as a widowed British nanny, and is hired on by his ex-wife to look after the children. After Daniel’s ruse is discovered, he faces harsh consequences, but his ex eventually relents and allows him to see his kids.
