Ouch...

Well, my best laid plans to host our second annual Canada Day party tomorrow - are on the shelf... somehow I managed to pinch my Sciatic nerve last night and am not allowed to drive or lift anything heavy for the next few days as I wander about my house in pain...

I can't do most of the usual remedies that I would use on my back - heat, heat and more heat or muscle relaxers... because Ach baby wouldn't like that... so for now, Wayne has kindly taken the day off work and is keeping up with Liam's needs and managing the house while I alternate between lying with a pillow between my legs and shuffling around the house...

I could use your good wishes for a speedy end to this - as we have an 18 hour drive next week to get home to see family...

Since I'm not hosting tomorrow, I think I'll still plan to make myself some poutine - that's french fries with beef gravy and cheese curds for those who don't speak Canadian... and I will still post the Nanaimo Bar recipe tomorrow along with a special Canadian giveaway package .... so make sure you stop by tomorrow, become a google connect or networked blogs follower below or become a facebook fan!

Canada Day recipe... Butter Tarts

This is my grandmother's recipe... and a yummy one at that...  it makes wonderfully gooey tarts that just melt in your mouth...

12 pre-baked tart shells (2 inch diameter)
1 egg
1 egg sized piece of butter at room temperature (I always figure just over 1/2 a stick in the US)
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup golden raisins

Pre-heat oven to 350F
Mix eggs, butter, brown sugar and vanilla together in a bowl.
Cover the bottom of each tart shell with raisins then spoon the butter mixture over it to 2/3 full
Bake tarts for 7-10 minutes or until sugar begins to crystalize
Remove from oven and let settle for 1 hour or more...

Options: you can use walnuts or pecans in place of the raisins for a crunchier texture
You can also bake this as an 8 inch pie instead and increase the baking time to 15-18 minutes

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for the Nanaimo Bar recipe... and a surprise!

A rant....

I don't usually use my blog for political or other controversial topics.. preferring to use it to share individual family moments, bits and pieces of my life and recipes and reviews... but as I sit here in sweltering South Carolina, I am a bystander to current happenings in my home city of Toronto...

Toronto is hosting a meeting of the G20 leaders this weekend and has virtually created a police state in downtown Toronto... and until this weekend, I was highly critical of some of the measures and tactics the city/province/federal government was using to create this atmosphere... Like removing refuse bins weeks ahead of the event, beginning over a week ago to close off the city streets in preparation, I thought that it was a little excessive.

Then yesterday, after several days of peaceful and otherwise effective protests, a small group of violent and otherwise organized 'protesters' started setting fire to police vehicles, destroying private property, vandalizing and looting businesses and causing the mayhem that brought over 19,000 police officers and almost a billion dollars in security costs to the city...

I suppose that some thought that burning symbols of their oppression was a worthwhile endeavour... but why vandalize and destroy a civilian car?  and to have vandalized and looted a MAC Cosmetics store, one of the more liberal businesses to be downtown... or to attack a media vehicle - there to film the cause  you are supposedly protesting for?

Frankly, aren't they just playing right into the hands of the government who said that they needed to be behind over 5 miles of fencing and spend the money on all this security?  People protest every day in Toronto, in front of the government buildings, various consulates and even the courthouses... many of them having larger numbers and more organized messages than the few thousand protesters who seem to have been drawn to the G20 summit...

On top of that, it's effecting the way people who have no other choice than to live, work or be downtown have to function:

  • One friend, who works in an art store that chose not to board up and close, witnessed the burning of a police vehicle and the chaos that rained.. who is now not going to work today because they've bowed to the pressure and boarded up their store too...
  • My cousin and her daughter who are in Sick Children's Hospital while her daughter recovers from yet another emergency surgery was locked down and had their outside air intake turned off, along with the hundreds of other children and their families battling illness and even death... and many others at downtown hospitals and workplaces...
  • The hundreds of downtown businesses that were forced to decide to close down and keep people home, losing money not only for the businesses, but also the families that were fed and housed by the wages of those businesses...

I'm all for making a stand, and having your voice heard... but it's your voice and your actions that are reflected... and now the city will pay more for the damage caused by these militant and vioilent people are just proving the skeptics right... and driving the cost of this meeting up even further...  The worst part is that these people are organized and there for that specific purpose... they went to Toronto specifically to wreck havoc...  next time, just stay home and prove the government wrong...

(My information was gleaned from various sources including the Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and personal Facebook correspondence - all opinions expressed were my own)

Guest Post: Heather's Hubby... Tea Party

With the primary elections having just taken place, I have been thinking a lot about voting.    I am not allowed to.  As a permanent resident (green card) I can not vote in any elections that mean anything to me in my adopted homeland - I have to be a citizen.  Now, I understand that citizenship should have certain privileges but wasn't there once a famous tea party in Boston with the idea that there should be no taxation without representation?  Well the USA government has no problem taking my tax dollars but yet I do not get a say in anything.  By the time I am allowed to apply for citizenship, I will have been in the USA, paying taxes, for about a decade.  I have colleagues from China who are on the wait list for a green card and they could very easily live here 20 years without the right to vote (all while paying taxes).

For those of us who are going through the proper immigration process (and spending thousands to do so) why not allow people to vote when they gain permanent resident status?  One of the core principles of USA society is fairness and justice.  Where is the fairness and justice in allowing people to pay taxes and contribute to society for over a decade before allowing the right to vote?

We have a winner!

MMMmonday - Rhubarb & Pineapple Jam

Although I haven't made this recipe yet, it's keeping me up nights thinking about getting far enough north in a few weeks to enjoy Rhubarb... and then I'm going to make this recipe (along with several others) since I've been craving rhubarb since I got pregnant.  I found this recipe at My Grandma's Recipes which was a featured blog last Friday on The SITS Girls

Rhubarb and Pineapple Jam

3 cups Rhubarb – cut in 3/4″ pieces
1 cup Pineapple – crushed
3 cups Sugar
Wash and cut rhubarb, measure and combine with pineapple and sugar in large saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Then boil rapidly 25-30 minutes until thick, stirring frequently. Pour into hot jelly jars and seal immediately with a thin layer of paraffin. Makes 3 to 3 1/2 cups.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I'm planning to...

Happy Father's Day!

Guest Post: Heather's Hubby... new rant

...but you get your summers off!

I don't know how many people in the last week have been telling me that it must be great to be a professor because I get my summers off.  Summers off?  When?  How? Where?  I would love to have my summers off.

What a lot of people do not understand about being a professor is that teaching is actually only about 40% of my job.  Research and something 'they' call service makes up the other 60% which in reality eats up much more time.  Thus, this is why summer is actually busier for me that during the 'school year.'

For instance, last year I published the following articles:

Zhang, L., Pan, B., Smith W.W., & Li, X.  (2009). Travelers' Use of Online Reviews and Recommendations: A Qualitative Study. Information Technology &Tourism. (11)2 157-167.

For each of these projects: 1) I had to get the money to first conduct the research (it is very expensive); 2) then I had to conduct the research itself (including all of the background reading and sourcing - last year I read somewhere in the area of 200 research articles as well as the data collection); and 3) then conduct the analysis of the results and write up each paper (think writing a 30 page term paper times five or six in a four month window).  Then even with doing all of this work, a journal can still easily reject an article.  Some of the journals I submit to only accept 3% to 5% of all of the articles submitted.  The work you are doing better be good.

The point of this rant is to give you an idea that summers off for professors are a misnomer.  While, like all professions, there are some that do not put the time and effort in, the majority of people I know and respect work hard year round.  In many countries around the world, being a professor is a prestigious occupation yet in the USA many professors could make more working at Ruby Tuesdays.

In total, I do love my job and the freedom that comes with it.  It provides me with a ton of opportunities to do what I love (explore the world around me).  I just wanted to share what the reality is.

Book Review- The Confessions of Catherine de Medici: A Novel

For those who don't know me well, one of the things that makes me quirky is that I had a double major in university of History and Medieval Studies (yeah, I know... the two most likely degree subjects to land me a job, not...), but my plan at the time was to become an elementary school teacher and that required a BA in something and a B ED in Ontario, so the BA was a present to myself... courses I knew I would love!

Since University, I have strayed from the typical text book type readings, but still love to read about historical women in fiction and biography - their lives are a fascinating glimpse not often found in traditional scholarship... so I was incredibly honoured and pleased to become part of the Virtual Book tour for The Confessions of Catherine de Medici: A Novel by C.W. Gortner through pumpupyourbook.com

The Confessions of Catherine de Medici: A Novel begins with snippets of Catherine as a young girl, profiling her spirit and resourcefulness at a young age.  Her rise to power as the last of the powerful Florentine Medici family and Queen and subsequently Regent of France and through to the end of her life is beautifully worked through fast paced chapters that bring to life the intrigue of court life and the shifts of power that move Europe through the Renaissance period.

I found the struggles between being a mother and a powerful political figure particularly interesting.  The time period of Catherine de Medici's life is one of constant war and upheaval as France and all of Europe are dividing along religious lines - Catholic and Protestant.

C.W. Gortner's portrayal of Catherine de Medici is both sympathetic and beautiful and I highly recommend that you pick up this book!

Book Review and Give Away - Rock Stars of the 80's and 90's

After reviewing another book about Rock Stars, I was approached by Victoria Mitchell to review her book: Rock Stars of the '80s and '90's!  A Collectors Book of Memorabilia

From the Publisher: "The more you love music, the more music you love," Said Abram Chaisins, pianist and composer.  His sentiment is brought to light vividly and artistically in Victoria Mitchell's new book, Rock Stars of the '80s and '90's!  A Collectors Book of Memorabilia. Mitchell's art is not about what she wants to see, but rather, about what she wants you to see... about a significant and miraculous time in the evolution of music.  Mitchell's book depicts some of the most famous bands and musicians from the '80s and '90s.  Having always been a music lover, Mitchell found it almost effortless to capture camera essences of musicians such as Jon Butcher and Stevie Ray Vaughn.  Climb on Victoria Mitchell's memorabilia bandwagon and enjoy the dazzling nostalgic ride.

My review:
This book is what it says it is... a dazzling array of concert and back stage photos from the '80s and '90s but the one thing I would have liked more was more words to describe and enlighten the viewer about the bands and individuals pictured... As a catalog of Ms. Mitchell's work as a photographer, this is a wonderful chronicle!  The photos are vivid, alive and stirring - many let you rush back to your concert going days with nostalgia and whimsy... Some of my favorite pictures include Poison, Kiss and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
There are also candid and interesting interview photos too... which show a different side of many of the rockers...
As a photo album and collection, this book is a good addition to your collection, but if you are looking for history or biographical information about the rockers themselves, this book isn't for you.

About the author:
Victoria Mitchell was 21 years old when she decided to follow her heart and become a professional photographer.   After photographing Jon Butcher and Stevie Ray Vaughn, she was hired by Merv Griffin's newly acquired radio statio, WHJY in Providence, RI, where she was tasked to handle all their publicity, trade and concert photography.  Rock Stars of the '80s and '90's!  A Collectors Book of Memorabilia offers selected favorites from Mitchell's personal photography collection.  Mitchell was born and raised in Massachusetts, moved to Providence as an adult, and now lives on the Treasure Coast of Florida with her husband and three children.

The GIVE AWAY:
One lucky reader will win an AUTOGRAPHED copy of Rock Stars of the '80s and '90's!  A Collectors Book of Memorabilia  by Victoria Mitchell.  Click here to enter.  Entries must be received by Midnight June, 22nd and the winner will be announced on June 23rd.  Give Away is open to all residents of Canada and the United States.

Where have you been Wednesday?

As I writing the title it brought to mind the old children's rhyme,

Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat, where have you been?
I've been to London, to visit the Queen.

Unfortunately, no great adventures or travels for me, but for the past week I've been both in recovery mode (after having wonderful houseguests for 10 days) and also end of the school year mode... with award ceremonies and parties and volunteer wrap ups etc...

besides, without my parents here, it's been tough to get my naps in - which has made this mommy to be one cranky little girl... and coping with the changing schedules and increasing humidity here in South Carolina hasn't helped... so I took an impromptu week off from everything bloggy... I have over 1000 posts to catch up on in my reader and a number of new reviews and give aways to write about... and I will get back on track for next week with everything MMMonday and PIN Tuesdays, but I needed the break to keep my head on straight...

I also celebrated my twelfth wedding anniversary with hubby, just a simple dinner out and a lovely new addition to our kitchen and garden as exchanged gifts... and of course those Barenaked Ladies to see this coming Saturday night ~~!!

I hope everyone else had an uneventful week and will stop by tomorrow and Friday to see my reviews (with giveaways) of:

Thursday: Rock Stars of the '80's and 90's! A Collectors book of Memorabilia by Victoria Mitchell
and
Friday: B-Natal Losenges
