Book Spotlight and Exerpt: No Better Man by Sara Richardson

Summer is the time to chill out and grab a great romance to read by the pool and I thought that some of you might just get a kick out of No Better Man by Sara Richardson -  I know that I did when I had a chance to read an ARC sneak peek!  For me, this was a quick read that brought a freshness to the storyline and fun characters to the forefront.  Not only do you have a strong heroine in Avery King, and a sexy, strong cowboy in Bryce Walker, you also have Moose!  Moose stole many scenes for me and helped bring the characters true nature to the forefront!  Please check out the excerpt below and find the appropriate buy link!

About NO BETTER MAN
A Daring Proposition
When it comes to business, Avery King always comes out on top. So after a very public breakup, work is the perfect excuse to flee the Windy City for the gentle breezes of Aspen, Colorado. Her mission: acquire the land of a rundown mountain ranch. Avery expects an easy win . . . until she meets the rugged and irresistible rancher who won't give up his property without a fight. Bryce Walker is stunned by the stubborn beauty determined to get what she wants. But what she wants is his last connection to the life he used to have. Bryce has plans to return the ranch to its former glory and no way will he sell his family home. Yet the more time he spends with Avery, the more her sweet touch makes him forget his painful memories. Now Bryce must decide whether living in the past is worth losing his future . . .

Excerpt:

Ah, hell. Not this. What was it with women, anyway? Why’d they have this burning desire to get to the bottom of absolutely every feeling they had? Why couldn’t they sit in silence, enjoy the scenery? “I don’t know you well enough to be upset with you,” he finally said, increasing his pressure on the gas pedal. The cops were notorious for pulling over speeders on this section through town, but tonight he was willing to risk it.
“Look.” Avery’s hands sliced the air in front of her. “I understand why you don’t want to sell. Trust me. I get it.”
Ha. Trust her. He didn’t trust her any more than he trusted her father. At the end of the day, she worked for the infamous Edward King. She might be smokin’ hot and nice, and, like she insisted, a good person, but she still had a job to do. He wouldn’t forget that.
Instead of answering, he leaned over and flicked on the radio. Nothing like a little Brad Paisley to tune out a woman.
Avery shot him a fiery look, topaz eyes blazing, lips thinned into a warning that tempted him to test her.
That didn’t help things. She looked even better when she got mad. His grip on the wheel tightened until his knuckles ached. Mom was right. He had to get out more. Start dating again. Any woman besides Avery King…
She hunched forward and fiddled with the radio until he could hardly hear Paisley. Fine. That was fine. Five more minutes and they’d be back at the ranch anyway. He’d be free of her.
“You need to listen to me, Bryce. Please.” She launched into yet another impassioned monologue about how selling the ranch could change his life.
Yeah, well. He’d had enough changes in his life over the last few years. So sue him if he wasn’t interested. She didn’t seem to pick up on his lack of concentration, though. She went on and on until he pulled the truck into the driveway and parked in front of the office.
“Are you listening to me?” She leaned over the console between them and got in his face, close enough that he could smell oranges, that he could trace the sexy curve of her upper lip with his tongue if he’d wanted to.
“Have you heard anything I’ve said?”
The throb started again, deep in his chest, invading his body until it occupied all of him.
“Seriously, Bryce this is—”
Screw it. He cupped his hand around the back of her head and roughly brought her lips to his, totally unprepared for the impact it would have. Shock waves coursed through him, unleashing a craving stronger than he’d ever felt.
Avery squeaked in surprise but he didn’t let up. Need thundered through him and it was a helluva lot louder than the logic he’d spent the last several hours beating into his thick skull. Her lips were soft and moist and everything he’d hungered for during the last three lonely years. He gentled a hand up into her hair. It felt like silk against his skin.
A small moan purred in her throat and her upper body relaxed, lips melding to his in a pulsating heat. She ran her hands up his chest, and that was all he needed. He bent forward, halfway over the console, gathering her closer, kissing her harder, deeper. If it wasn’t for that console, he’d pull her right into his lap…
“Wow. Just…wow,” she whispered against his lips.
He answered by parting her lips with his tongue. There. That’d take care of her chatting problem.
Avery gasped a sharp intake of air, her chest rising against his.
Taking it as an invitation, he commanded her with his lips, opening and closing them in a sensual rhythm. A dull ache resounded in his chest. God, he’d forgotten the depth of a kiss…
He shifted to get a better angle, more access, but that console…
She pulled back with a small smile, lips grazing his in a tease, then she pressed in again and proved that she could make out as well as she could talk.
A scratching sound scraped the window. Moose whined, then barked.
Great timing, as usual.

Eventually, Sara did the responsible thing and got an education in writing and journalism. After a brief stint in the corporate writing world, she stopped ignoring the voices in her head and started writing fiction. Now, she uses her experience as a mountain adventure guide to write stories that incorporate adventure with romance. Still indulging her adventurous spirit, Sara lives and plays in Colorado with her saint of a husband and two young sons.

Bull Riding, Babies and Romance.. Oh My - Check out the latest from Harlequin Romance!

As a Canadian ex-pat living in the US, I am hyper aware of finding our national symbol when I am out and about (and yes I put that in there for all of you Americans thinking that I am saying oot and aboot...) and it's even more fun when the symbolism comes in as nice a package as one of the latest releases from Harlequin Romance - one of four revived titles by one of my favorite authors, Tina Leonard.

Check out Zane Lambert, who lives in Alberta, Canada but is originally from Manitoba and is on the cover of the fourth book in the re-released series, available only at Walmart!

Harlequin Pro Bull Riders stories are heartwarming contemporary tales of everyday women finding love in the arms of the quintessential American icon, wrapped up in manliness and romance. The stories showcase the charm of small-town America and the ruggedness of Western locales and regularly feature Western characters as protagonists.

Each book contains exclusive content, including biographies, interviews, photos, signed reader letters from the riders and $20 of value-added coupons for select PBR events, fan club membership and upcoming Harlequin titles.

You can check out the first chapter of all four titles and print coupons to save $1.00 each!

Synopsis

Ethan Frost, the irresistible leading man from the New York Times bestsellers Ruined and Addicted, returns once again in Exposed—a novel that’s perfect for fans of J. Kenner and Sylvia Day.

Will Ethan Frost go too far for the woman he loves?

The moment Chloe Girard walked into my life, she exposed secrets and emotions I always thought were best kept buried.

She wants to move on, to ignore the past. But I can’t do that. Not when she still suffers. And not when the man who hurt her remains unscathed. So when I discover the perfect opportunity to make him pay for what he did to Chloe, I can’t walk away, no matter the consequences.

But there’s a fine line between justice and obsession. As I turn up old crimes and new lies, I know that I’m playing with fire—and risking the very foundations of our relationship. My love for Chloe is absolute. I just hope it’s enough to save us both.

Bon Appetit and a Book - From Fake to Forever

Romance is in the air once again and this time, I am happy to share a recipe from award-winning author Kat Cantrell that she thinks pair well with her latest Harlequin title, From Fake to Forever

FROM FAKE TO FOREVER – After an impromptu Vegas wedding that shouldn’t be valid, Meredith Chandler-Harris just discovered she's still tied to businessman Jason Lynhurst. She needs out of their marriage, but if he's to become his company's new CEO, he needs her as a bride. Meredith can have her divorce, but only after he gets what he wants—which is more than merely a promotion.

KAT CANTRELL read her first Harlequin novel in third grade and has been scribbling in notebooks since she learned to spell. What else would she write but romance? She majored in Literature, officially with the intent to teach, but somehow ended up buried in middle management at Corporate America, Inc. After three years and many thousands of words, her dream of publication finally came true. When she's not writing about characters on the journey to happily-ever-after, she can be found at a soccer game, watching Friends or dancing with her kids to Duran Duran and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

And this is what she'd suggest you pair with this book:

Hummus and Pita Chips
This is my recipe for hummus, which I love to make fresh because store-bought generally has a high sodium content, as well as preservatives and other yucky stuff. This is easy to make and doesn't call for tahini which can be expensive.

Ingredients (4 servings)

1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained, liquid reserved
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 drops sesame oil, or to taste (optional)

PREP
5 mins
READY IN
5 mins

Directions
Blend garbanzo beans, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, cumin, salt, and sesame oil in a food processor; stream reserved bean liquid into the mixture as it blends until desired consistency is achieved. Spoon into a serving bowl. You can let the flavors blend several hours or overnight before serving this.

To make fresh pita chips:
Cut two-three pitas into wedges (like a pizza)
Arrange on a pan and brush with olive oil
Grind or sprinkle salt and pepper to taste
Cook for 15 minutes at 375.

This is such an easy snack. I love to make it with my two boys and there are things even the little one can do. He likes to use the basting brush to "paint" the chips with oil. My older son likes to use the food processor--probably because I don't make him clean it!

You can also check out these other titles that highlight some fun I DO's this month:

·          The Billionaire's Bridal Bargain - by USA Today bestselling author Lynne Graham. To get his hands on her Mediterranean island inheritance, Cesare Sabatino must wed innocent Lizzie and ensure she's carrying his heir! Luckily the formidable Italian is legendary for his powers of persuasion. With Lizzie desperate to save her family's farm, it's only a matter of time before she gives in and discovers the many pleasurable benefits of wearing this tycoon's ring.
·          The Italian's Deal for I Do – by award-winning author Jennifer Hayward. He's conquered global markets and immeasurable hearts, but to regain control of the fashion empire that's rightfully his, Rocco Mondelli must prove his playboy days are over. His secret weapon? Supermodel-in-hiding Olivia Fitzgerald and the power to ruin her if she refuses to play his loving fiancée!

Bon Appétit and a Book: Mexican Tea Cake Cookies while you read PROTECTION DETAIL By Shirlee McCoy

For something different, I asked author Shirlee McCoy what she would want to eat while reading her latest inspirational fiction book, Protection Detail (Capitol K-9 Unit) and she suggested that it was best read with something yummy and sweet!

"There's something warm and homey about a couple of yummy cookies and a cup of hot tea. Add a good book, and it's the perfect way to spend a dreary afternoon or a cold night. My all-time favorite cookie is as easy to make as it is delicious. Even better, it's a six ingredient cookie! Quick, simple and delicious!"

Mexican Tea Cake Cookies

1 cup unsalted butter softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp . vanilla
2 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cups finely chopped pecans
extra powdered sugar

Mix butter, powdered sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add flour and salt. Stir in pecans.
Chill dough for an hour.

Preheat oven to 350.
Roll dough into one inch balls and place them on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes. While cookies are still warm, roll them in the extra powdered sugar.

If you can, let them cool before eating.

If you can't, grab your book, your tea or coffee, find a comfy chair and enjoy!

More about Protection Detail (Capitol K-9 Unit)

After a prominent senator’s son is murdered, Captain Gavin McCord of the Capitol K-9 Unit
wants answers. The senator was a mentor to Gavin, and Gavin will stop at nothing to bring the killer to justice in Protection Detail.
With his team of elite K-9 cops and his loyal dog, Glory, at his side, Gavin discovers that a child at Cassie Danvers’ nearby foster home may have witnessed the murder.
He’s drawn to the determined and beautiful woman, but she doesn’t want him interviewing her traumatized charges. Yet trusting Gavin is the only way to stay one step ahead of the deadly gunman when Cassie becomes a target.
Protection Detail is available in paperback and e-book.

SHIRLEE MCCOY knew early that she wanted to write inspirational fiction and began writing her first novel when she was a teenager. Still, it wasn't until her third son was born that she truly began pursuing her dream of being published. Three years later she sold her first book.

Now a busy mother of four, Shirlee is a homeschool mom by day and an inspirational author by night. She and her husband and children live in Maryland and share their home with a dog and a guinea pig.

Author Interview: The Genesis One Code

I am pleased to invite Daniel Friedmann, author of The Genesis One Code, to Acting Balanced today.

1. What was the motivating factor to writing the book?

To become an engineer I studied engineering physics, which had a large physics and cosmology component. I realized then that some answers were missing in science, and continued to search for them both in science and in Kabbalah, which I began studying 13 years ago.

2. Why now?

Once my nephews entered high school and university, I found they had similar questions, and in discussions with them, I became motivated to work harder on the issues.

The book is organized from the perspective of time -- physical dynamics of the universe all the way to the human/anthropological. How did you choose how to order the book?

The order of the book was natural - I started at the beginning of time and then moved forward chronologically.

3. How did you pick the points to compare?

The chronology of Genesis and science agree for almost everything so it was straight forward to compare everything. The points of comparison focused on the events described in Genesis. Although science has a more detailed chronology Genesis contains the key highlights.

4. Who is the audience for this book, primarily?

My main target audience is the 12- to 30-year-olds that come out of our secular system believing science has all the answers and the Bible has become somewhat irrelevant at explaining our origins. I wanted them to know that the Bible actually has answers to questions that remain unanswered by science. Since I started writing the book, I have seen interest from all ages.

5. How has the book been received, both by those in the religious world and those in the scientific community?

The book is being well received by much of the religious world - although some of those that hold to a literal 6-day interpretation of Genesis have issues with it. The scientific community has not really engaged yet, although a number of scientists have read it and found it thought provoking.

6. What Makes Your Book Unique?

The Genesis One Code is the first book to rigorously reconcile the religious and scientific accounts of our origins, written in response to most people’s quandary about the origins of the universe and life, and the seemingly incompatibility between the biblical description and the latest scientific findings

7. What does The Genesis One Code mean?

The title “Genesis One” refers to the Bible, Chapter One of Genesis, which contains the creation account. The “Code” refers to a simple formula that translates one “creation day” into time as we measure it. With this formula, 1 creation day equals 2.56 billion years - derived from biblical text wherein science and religion timelines for the development of the universe and life on earth are equivalent.
http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7154509255997275263#editor/target=post;postID=3022077128444643970

8. I see you have a new book that will be published soon tell me about it?

My new book is a sequel to the Genesis One Code. It deals with Human origins form a biblical and scientific perspective. It addresses these recurring questions

Was Adam the first man, ever? Was man created in a divine act, in less than one day almost 6,000 years ago, as the Bible suggests?
Or did man appear 200,000 years ago, as the culmination of numerous human-like species that existed over a span of millions of years, as the scientific record shows?

9. What is the main message of the book?

The Genesis One Code is the first book to rigorously reconcile the religious and scientific accounts of our origins, written in response to most people’s quandary about the origins of the universe and life, and the seemingly incompatibility between the biblical description and the latest scientific findings.
Age of the universe resolved: 13.7 billion year or 6000 years - both are correct they just speak in a different language. Similarly the rest of the scientific and Genesis timeline for the development of the universe and life on earth is reconciled.

Thank you so much for visiting Acting Balanced today!

More about Daniel Friedmann:

He is the author of The Genesis One Code, which demonstrates an alignment between the times of key events described in the creation narrative in the book of Genesis with those derived from scientific theory and observation. He is currently writing a second book entitled Adam and the Homo sapiens which will demonstrate an alignment between the key events and timeline recounting the appearance of humans in the book of Genesis with those derived from the fossil record and genetic studies.

Born in Chile and raised in Canada, he is currently CEO of Canada’s leading aerospace company which built the Canadarms, and is involved in space exploration and the Hubble telescope. He is a professional engineer and holds a master’s degree in engineering physics. He has 30 years’ experience in the space industry, having worked on projects in fifteen countries while throughout the decades conducting extensive scientific research. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers on space industry topics and cosmology. He is also a longtime student of religion and for the past 14 years has attended the Vancouver Kollel center for learning. His work on reconciling the biblical account with scientific observation utilizing his biblical clock formula has been reported in various newspapers, magazines and radio talk shows. He is passionate about helping young adults put science and the Bible in correct context.

Daniel pedals to work, 45 minutes each way while listening to bible study lectures on an mp3 player. In summer months, the spry 56-year-old sea kayaks, hikes and rock climbs. From October to June, he loves skiing, especially in the backcountry.

Hi! I’m Regina Duke. I’ve been writing for (gasp!) fifty years, collecting some lovely rejection slips along the way. When indie publishing became a possibility, I decided this was my opportunity to find out if people really enjoyed my books or not. What a wonderful way to share my stories! I wake up every morning, looking forward to writing the next one. And I am delighted by the responses from readers.

When I’m not writing, I am teaching my dogs tricks and attending dog events in obedience, rally, and agility. Many of my books have dogs in them. Guest Post: Book Power By Avery Flynn author of Passion Creek

I am pleased to have Avery Flynn, author of The Layton Family Series, including the latest installment: Passion Creek, back on Acting Balanced!  You can check out my interview with her by clicking here!  You can also check out her blog tour announcement that I posted here!

Today she's back with a guest post about being a writer:

Book Power

Unlike Willie Nelson, my heroes have always been writers.
Last summer, I took my daughter to the National Book Fair and stood in line for an hour to meet Katherine Paterson and have her sign our copy of Bridge to Terabithia. I will not lie. I was a billion times more excited than the wee one.
I vividly remember curling up in the back corner of my local library and falling into Jess' and Leslie's world. I was in second grade and my father had passed away a year before. The library had become a refuge of sorts for me filled with books that took me away from everything else. I don't know how I ended up with Bridge to Terabithia at that crucial time in my life. You can call it fate, luck or divine providence, I'm just glad it happened. And (spoiler alert) when Jess grieves in an ugly, messy, angry way after Leslie dies, I started to grieve a little bit less for my dad. That book was the best therapy I've ever had.
Fast forward a decade (or several decades if you want to be specific), and I’m e-mailing back and forth with Lori Foster. Let me say it again to emphasize how excited I still am about this: LORI FOSTER! She is one of my writing heroes. When I’m writing I want to weave in the suspense with the sexual tension and the romance growing between the hero and the heroine. In some books, like Temptation Creek, there is a long build up. In other cases, like my newest release Passion Creek, the hero and heroine find a physical connection almost immediately. In Sam Layton’s  and Josie Winarsky’s story, its a sign of the heart and body understanding how things are going to work out well before the head is willing to admit it. I learned that from reading Lori Fosters awesome books.
Every writer out there started out as a reader. We first fell in love not with our own words, but someone else's.
Even today all I have to do is crack open a book or click on the iPad and I tumble down the rabbit hole into a fantastic world of make believe. I find love, laughter, thrills, chills and - sometimes - tears in those pages. How awesome is that?
About Passion Creek by Avery Flynn

Uptight history professor Sam Layton may have the abs of a movie action hero, but he stopped believing in the joy of adventure a long time ago. However, when a one-night stand with a tattooed bombshell leads to a treasure map for the long-buried Rebecca’s Bounty, the call to action is too strong to ignore.

All Las Vegas cocktail waitress Josie Winarsky wants to do is paint. But when she lands smack dab in the middle in a mob plot, she has to push aside her dreams to find a treasure in Dry Creek, Nebraska and save her family from harm. With Sam at her side and a Vegas loan shark on her tail, the treasure she finds turn out to be much more valuable than emeralds and rubies.

Passion Creek by Avery Flynn available Aug. 31.
