Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Times Square is the setting for the infamous ball drop signaling a brand new year....when did you last 'drop the ball' on something?

I recently had a paper I was working on that I got a writers block on.  It took me almost a year to get a revision in on it.  The paper has been three years in the making.  Frustrating all around.

2. What is one thing you resolved to do in 2013 that you actually did?

I resolved to spend a little more time at home and I managed to do so.  I am getting better at balancing work and home life.

3. Jack London is quoted as saying, "You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." Agree or disagree? Why?

I think you have to have drive to be successful in life.  Like anything else though, balance is required.  Sometimes you need to be aggressive while other times a more passive approach is more appropriate.  Always going at anything only in one way makes you myopic.

4. What was the best thing you ate in 2013?

I had a lot of good meals in 2013.  My favorite was probably the Coca Cola cake I had a Jestine's Kitchen...

Coca Cola Cake
Ingredients for cake:
2 cups self-rising flour
2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup Coca-Cola
1 cup butter
1 and 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting:
1/2 cup butter
1 tablespoon cocoa
6 tablespoons Coca-Cola
1 pound box confectioner's sugar

1. Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch pan and set aside. In a large bowl combine flour and sugar. In a saucepan combine the cocoa, Coca-Cola, butter, and marshmallows; bring to a boil. Combine the boiled mixture with the flour and sugar mixture.

2. In a separate bowl mix eggs, buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla; add to the first mixture. Pour into prepared pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes, until cake tests done.

3. For frosting: in a saucepan, bring butter, cocoa, and Coca-Cola to a boil. Stir in the sugar and mix well. Spread over the cake while both cake and frosting are still warm.

Makes about 16 servings.
5.  Share an anti-resolution...that is, something you plan to keep on doing in the new year.

I just plan to keep on truckin' - so to speak.  Keep the good in my life and try to improve the other aspects of it.

6. The Pantone color of the year for 2014 is radiant orchid.  Like or no like? Would I find this color anywhere in your home or wardrobe? Will you add something in this shade to either?

I have a tie that has that color in it.  I do wear it on occaison.

7. In three words or less sum up your 2013?

Continual rising tide.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I am so looking forward to getting the routine of a new term started.  The kids need the structure of school.  I need to get back in the rhythm of work and Heather needs the sanity.
