DVD Review: Scholastic Storybook Treasures

I am pleased to be reviewing a set of titles from Scholastic Storybook Treasures.  I received the My First DVD set, featuring Splat the Cat and two other DVDs. Scrambled States...and More Stories by Laurie Keller and The North Star ... More Stories about Imagination.

This DVD collection reminds me of the book and cassette sets that I used to have as a kid, gone high tech!  Each DVD has several stories on it and has a read aloud together component, as well as bonus features like author interviews and more.  My favorite DVD of the series that I received was Splat the Cat which features:

SPLAT THE CAT (Written and illustrated by Rob Scotton, narrated by John Keating) The first day of school is always tough so Splat brings along his mouse pal, Seymour. He quickly learns that cats are supposed to chase mice! What else will Splat learn?
PICNIC (Written and illustrated by Emily Arnold McCully) The littlest mouse disappears on the way to a family outing, temporarily putting a damper on the fun and games. Will they ever find the little fella?
HONDO & FABIAN (Written and illustrated by Peter McCarty, narrated by Jeff Brooks) What happens when the dog of the house goes to the beach and leaves the cat at home with the baby? Find out in this gentle tale.
LEO THE LATE BLOOMER (Written by Robert Kraus, illustrated by Jose Aruego, narrated by Mary Beth Hurt) What’s the matter with Leo? He can’t read, write, eat neatly or speak like the other baby animals. His parents are very concerned, but one day that all changes.
These DVDs are great to keep in the car or pop in when you need some down time  because they not only entertain, they also help kids with word recognition and reading.  Each story is a separate piece, so you can watch just a 7-10 minute short, or watch multiple stories.  One of the things that we did after watching the DVD was to actually go out and get Liam the print copy of books that had caught his eye, so now he watches the read along dvd while holding the print copy in his lap - a win-win where he also learns about turning pages etc...

If you're looking for some great educational dvds for your preschooler to first grader this summer, I highly recommend checking out the line up at http://www.newkideo.com and picking up a few of your favorites to share with your kids!
