SOS Children's Village 2011 Other Mothers Contest

SOS Children’s Villages is announcing its inaugural 2011 Other Mothers Contest conducted between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Other Mothers are those who fill the gap - grandparents, uncles and aunts, friends, foster parents, or others who mother a child when biological parents cannot.

The Other Mothers Contest will start on Mother’s Day, May 8, and end June 12. The Other Mother of the Year will be announced on June 16 along with other winners, just before Father’s Day! Anyone wishing to nominate the Other Mother in his or her life can do so either in writing or through a brief video. Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan will serve along with other celebrity judges to select five written and five video finalists. The public will vote online to select the Other Mother of the Year and runners-up.

Prizes for The Other Mothers Contest have been generously donated by sponsors and include a family of Schwinn bicycles, a 4 day / 3 night getaway to one of Marriot’s Residence Inns, Amway gift baskets, Barnes & Noble NOOK Color Reader’s Tablets and Love Quotes scarves.

Dr. Heather Paul, CEO of the U.S. Headquarters of SOS Children’s Villages, said the contest will call attention to the critical role Other Mothers play in children’s lives and in society. “With nearly half a million children in foster care and one in ten children in the U.S. living with a grandparent, Other Mothers are crucial to the development of secure, independent young adults.” Dr. Paul explained, “The mission of SOS Children’s Villages is to provide stable homes to children who do not have their own biological parents to care for them. SOS Mothers worldwide provide the love and nurturing that any child needs. That compassion and goodness is precisely what we are celebrating through this contest.”
