Product Review: FlipFlop Wines

The hardest part of this product review wasn't getting it, trying it or even writing this review - it was finding a free night where I could get together with a girlfriend for a few glasses of wine and a good chat!  Wayne isn't a drinker (at least not since college, but that's fodder for Sunday Family Stories not a review of a great family of wines), and I hated to open three bottles of wine for tasting and comparison on my own, so I spent a few weeks trying to coordinate schedules with a couple of friends and finally was able to find a free night where my friend, Fran could come over and enjoy our Flipflop wine tasting... you don't know how hard it was to keep from cracking them open, but I really wanted to share the experience ...

We had three bottles to sample:

  • a lovely dry pinot grigio with flavors of tropical fruit and a really zesty, dry quality.
  • a smooth and refreshing riesling that had peach and apricot notes and was wonderfully sweet
  • and a wonderfully rich pinot noir with cherry and spice that made it a fabulous sipping wine.
We started with the pinot grigio and found it to be everything that it promised - it reminded me of spring - very new and refreshing and it would be great to have with appetizers or dinner!

Fran's favorite, hands down, was the riesling, which we both decided was perfect for summer sipping in the backyard or around the pool, it was sweet and mild without being cloying and would still pair well with a meal, but we'd totally crack open a bottle while the food was cooking on the barbecue and the kids were splashing in their kiddy pool!

My favorite, by a really close margin was the pinot noir, I loved the earthiness and the spicy taste that, when combined with an equally rich food would just explode in your mouth!  This might just become my go-to wine for late evening reading in the tub (once Erik sleeps enough for me to stay awake long enough to enjoy a good bath after the kids to to bed).

I've always been a 'red' girl, but I have to say that the riesling gave me pause for thought - and it would definitely win if I were thinking about the best wine to pair with mom friends and great conversation, I think it's probably got the broadest appeal of the three wines I tried.

I have to say that now that I've tried those three wines, I really need to try the merlot, the chardonnay, the moscato and the cabernet sauvignon (hint to hubby who may be looking for a mother's day gift) - all seven are available to order online and at only $7 a bottle or $84 a case, very reasonably priced too!

And if the price doesn't get you, this might:
