Review: The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy DVD

Many of you know that we're still struggling to get Liam potty trained.  He'll go through many of the motions, but just won't go in the potty - he also doesn't seem to care whether its pull ups or underwear, dry or wet, the sensation doesn't bother him as much as the act of sitting on or standing beside the potty, so I've started to enlist the help of The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy.

The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made EasyWhat I love about this DVD is that it walks Liam through all of the steps in going potty and reinforces the routine that his teacher and I have started to use.  Since watching the DVD, Liam has made strides in telling us when he wants to go pee pee in the potty, and has even gotten a few drops to go, but he's still got some fears and anxieties over sitting on the potty.

What I like about this DVD is that it engages children in both the music and the action of using a toilet or potty chair and reinforces that this action is 'grown up' and 'important'.  For typically developing children, there are lots of great ideas to help reinforce good potty behavior, but unfortunately for my son with Autism, we're still struggling to put it all together.  He's started memorizing and singing the songs though, so I hope with repetition that we'll see progress!

Now that the weather is getting warmer, I hope to redouble our efforts in getting Liam daytime trained... I'm sure that with the other strides he's making in language, particularly receptive language, that his ability to comprehend and see the value of going in the potty will come to fruition.

Even though we're not there yet, I think that The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy is a great resource for all parents who are introducing the potty to their children and I also really like the potty training tips and FAQ sections of the Magic Bowl website.  You can also check out a clip of the DVD on their site too!

At only $14.95, The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy is a great resource for first time or even experienced parents who are trying to introduce the potty to their children.

I plan to continue to update you on the progress we make as a family in getting Liam potty trained, since it's such a big goal for both school and home, and I'm sure that The Magic Bowl: Potty Training Made Easy is going to help provide the breakthrough we need!

Would she miss me at all?

Sometimes you wonder what would happen if you suddenly disappeared for a time... what if i were abducted by aliens, would my kids even miss me at all or would their lives just keep right on going... as part of the "Mars Needs Moms" movie promotion, they've put the question to moms on Social Moms and I'm up for the challenge

Well, for the boys, since they are young and dependent, I have to say that there are ten really easy and practical things that they would miss, so that post would be really easy to write - especially since I am breastfeeding Erik - I'd be missed within a very short window of time... and since Liam doesn't qualify for bussing from school, as soon as class was over at 3pm and I wasn't there to get him, he'd know something was up...

What would be more interesting is what Robyn, my 12 year old would miss, in my opinion... so I am dedicating this post to what I think my tween would miss most...

10.  Getting up for school on time... which would mean that she'd no longer be part of the News Team at school.  An alarm clock with a hammer could be my replacement, because the three regular alarm clocks in her room certainly aren't doing the job... even the one that's positioned across the room... hmmm that could have something to do with the fact that she doesn't set them

9. Having clean school and after school clothes... she seems to think that either the laundry mysteriously does itself or that if she puts her stuff in the washer after 3 days of nagging, the laundry fairy will automatically move it to the dryer, and then fold it or hang it... and usually I do, only because I'm doing 4 other people's laundry... and her stuff gums up the works.

8. Food in the fridge - again, the shopping list on the front of the fridge is regularly filled with food and drink suggestions from my daughter - and her hollow leg... and amazingly, after her brothers and I get back from our regular trip to the grocery store, the fridge, freezer and pantry are full of treats and foods.  The one thing I have to say is that she's taking more of an interest in cooking, so if I follow her shopping list requests, I sometimes get yummy food made for me, which is a huge treat and a good trade off...

7. Clean dishes to make the food and eat it from... she's getting better about at least returning the dishes to the kitchen sink or counter, but has yet to make the leap to actually putting it in the dishwasher, unless forced under duress... then again, I'm picky about how the dishwasher gets loaded, so even hubby leaves his dishes in the sink for me to do...

6. Nagging...this is a catch all thing, but I'm sure she'd miss me reminding her to put the dishes away, do her laundry... cause I know how much she loves it...

5. Personal hygiene... this is one of the things I currently nag on... she's still adjusting to the teen hormones and the consequences of that... nuff said?

4. Personal time - if there was no me, she'd be spending all of her after school time taking care of her siblings, doing the chores and waiting for hubby to get home to do her homework...  Right now, she comes home, does her homework, helps with chores and then has enough free time to decompress, play on the web or take a bike ride...

3. A shopping partner - taking hubby out to buy bras, feminine hygiene products and dresses would not be fun...

2. A sparring partner - she and I can butt heads with the best them.. I know she'd miss our 'disagreements' and 'discussions'

1. But, honestly, most of all, I think she'd miss the hugs, cuddles and good night routine that we started when she was 3 years old and first came to live with us... a hug, a cuddle and the rhyme or not - "Night, Night, Sleep tight, Don't let the ___ bite, if they bite, squeeze them tight, they won't come back til ___ night"
We change up what's biting - everything from bugs to wild creatures, from monsters to little brothers... and how long it will be till they're back... but we still do it every night that we're both at home... or we can phone each other...

Writing this post has got me intrigued about Mars Needs Moms, so I'm going to check it out when it comes out March 11th.. maybe I'll even make it a 'girls night' and leave hubby home with the boys so Robyn and I can go...

Product Review - Pirose for Nursing & Fashion

As a nursing mom, I've tried it all, blankets, nursing covers, just ignoring the stares and finally, the Pirose for Nursing.
Invented by a nursing mother, Pirose is a lightweight, breathable nursing scarf like no other on the market. Designed for new mothers who refuse to sacrifice style for function, the revolutionary Pirose works as a multi-way nursing scarf and fashion accessory providing discreet coverage and a stylish touch.
With modern prints and subtle florals, Pirose offers a wide array of designs to suit any new mother's style, while still offering complete nursing coverage.
Graceful, elegant feminine and beautiful, Pirose is a stylish blend of fashion and function for new mothers. Depending on your style, each Pirose comes in a length and design to complement any look.
I received the Jordyn for Nursing in Large as part of the MamaBzz tour.  As you can see below, the choice of small, medium or large isn't really about your size, but it's more about how you'd want to wear it.  And that's the beauty of the Pirose as opposed to any other nursing cover on the market.

What I like about the Pirose for nursing is that it's an accessory for me that also works for nursing - as opposed to the other nursing covers available out there.  It is soft, silky and feels great.  I wouldn't have chosen the Jordyn print for myself, since I'm more of a blues/purples person, but I've found that the bold gold, orange and brown print is growing on me!  I love just how versatile it is and how light and airy!  This is going to be great for nursing in the summer time when I won't want anything heavy!

As for nursing, it's great because I can organize it to peek in on Erik because the neckline is generous enough to work around and view him, without exposing anything.  It's also great because he's now pulling things down and because it goes over my head, when he pulls he doesn't expose anything, unlike when he pulled the nursing cover completely off because it was just around my neck by a small connector.

When I don't want to wear it, because it's so easy, it folds up tiny and can be stowed in the diaper bag, or even worn as a scarf accessory to decorate my diaper bag!

I love all the ways I can wear it - check out this video to see what I mean:

The Pirose retails for just $35.00 and is a fabulous idea for shower gift giving or coming up for Mother's Day, because it's not just for baby, but for mom too!

You can also follow Reno Rose, makers of the Pirose on Twitter and Facebook.

You can also win one by entering at MamaBzz.com

MMMmonday - Caribbean Chicken Salad and recipe linky

Robyn cooked dinner tonight - her favorite thing to do is to head to Publix and check out their Apron's Simple Meals area and pick something to make for dinner...

Tonight's meal was Caribbean Chicken Salad and it was yummy, so I'm going to share the recipe and our changes in red:

Ingredients

3–4 Deli chicken tenders (.75 lb) - we used 1/2 a dozen frozen chicken strips
1 mango
Juice of 1 lime - we used realime (a cop out I know, but the limes looked terrible today)
1 head Bibb (or iceberg) lettuce - skipped this and just used bowls
3 tablespoons mango chutney
2 tablespoons peach preserves
3 tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt - used a sm container of plain yogurt and omitted mayo
2 tablespoons light mayonnaise
1 (12-oz) bag broccoli slaw
1/2 cup golden raisins - we used plain dark raisins
2 tablespoons sunflower seeds - we omitted because we forgot to get them
Prep

  • Cut chicken tenders into thin slices.
  • Peel and slice mango (1 1/2 cups).
  • Squeeze lime for juice (1 tablespoon).
  • Remove lettuce core; separate individual leaves.
Steps

  1. Prepare dressing in medium bowl by whisking chutney, preserves, and lime juice until smooth. Stir in yogurt and mayonnaise until blended.
  2. Add slaw, chicken, mango, and raisins; toss to coat.
  3. Arrange lettuce leaves on serving plates and top with salad; sprinkle with sunflower seeds. Serve.
CALORIES (per 1/4 recipe) 470kcal; FAT 14g; CHOL 60mg; SODIUM 700mg; CARB 61g; FIBER 6g; PROTEIN 27g; VIT A 90%; VIT C 150%; CALC 10%; IRON 10%

This was really yummy and a great, quick meal - the hardest thing was chopping the mango!  If you actually bought pre-made chicken tenders you'd be done in no time flat..
Next time, I would probably just grill chicken breasts and cube them instead of adding breaded tenders.

Here's the last chance to add to this month's recipe linky!  I can't believe it's going to be March already!

A Blog Hop for...

a reason...

I don't usually participate in generalized blog hops anymore... see my usual Thursday rant for the reason and my solution ...

It wasn't that long ago I was fretting over hitting the same plateau, so I'm asking all of you dear followers of mine to pop over to Mingle Monday, check out KDBuggie and make a new google friend! Tell her I sent you ;)

Best Laid plans, Happy Birthday Mom and ... bonus entry

I was going to stay home and write a ton of overdue posts... but it's a beautiful sunny day, without a cloud in the sky and 70 degrees out... so I'm playing hooky and taking the boys to the park...

That being said, I've got a bonus entry for you for ONE entry into any ONE giveaway, good until well after the sun has set here (11:59 PM EST today 2/27)

It's also my fabulous Mother, Judy's birthday today.. she claims she's 29, but since I'm 35, she must be at least 39 right?

Since I can't be with her to celebrate, since she's in snowy Toronto and I'm here in sunny SC, please leave your birthday wishes for her today on today's post, from wherever you are in the world...

And then you can use the bonus code: Happy Birthday Judy on one giveaway... including these that all end tomorrow:

Product Review: ReBinder

I hate when companies take something that could be recycled or upcycled and do something to it that makes it impossible or at least more difficult... so when I came across ReBinder, the green office products people, I was really happy to see that not only were their products made from recycled materials, that it would be very easy to recycle the products again when they had gotten beyond their usefulness...
I was sent the above sample set of products to try out... and I did get to touch everything first, before Robyn and Wayne laid claim to most of it!
ReBinder is the leading manufacturer of unique green office supplies. All ReBinder product materials are sourced from verified FSC and SFI certified sources and assembled by a local, AbilityOne certified disabled workforce. Our eco friendly products make a difference and make sense.
What I love - the binders are so sturdy!  They may not be a flashy color, but the choice of recycled cardboard or chipboard mean that these binders are STRONG!  The hardware in them is also high quality, so you can rest assured that they'll stand up to the toughest of tasks!  You can add office labels, draw right on them... or my favorite idea, use it as a craft project and either decoupage on it or cover it with fabric!  They come in every size from 0.5" to 4" binders and three different levels of quality!  What I really love is that you can customize your binder by adding a folder pocket, tab dividers and more, all made from recycled cardboard or chipbo!  But the best part of the ReBinder is that not only can you recycle your binder quickly and easily when it's outlived it's usefulness, but you can REUSE the binder rings by purchasing just a new cover for it!  There are just two screws to undo and you're back in business!

Another product that I really like is the RePocket presentation folder - this beats those flimsy two pocket folders hands down... it's sturdy, stays together and looks stylish - and again, you can customize it any way you want!

I also received samples of:

ReSleeve: Our recycled cardboard CD sleeve without the plastic. ReSleeves are made from rigid 16pt bending chipboard to protect your CD/DVD . The perfect off the shelf solution for the software company, music label, the band or the board room. Show off the artwork on your CD through the open hole in the front...or choose the version with no hole.

RePlay: Ideal for one disc or two, RePlay recycled cardboard CD cases come with two open pockets that fit a single disc and a small booklet or two discs. The same size and shape as a traditional jewel case but made from 18 point recycled bending chipboard. You'll want to replace all your broken plastic jewel cases with a RePlay.
ReBadge: Tradeshows, Conferences, and Seminars all produce a lot of waste. ReBadge is sure to be the topic of conversation at your event. Your attendees won't believe that their badge is made from plants and not from plastic! We hope you'll reuse your ReBadge multiple times, but if you can't -- compost it! Comes with a sample our 100% recycled perforated brown cardstock.
ReWrite mini -- LINED: We've created the perfect sized 5" x 8"recycled notebook for taking notes, sketching or doodling. Our ReWrite mini comes with 32 pages of 100% Recycled / FSC Certified paper and a recycled FSC Certified bending chipboard cover. You'll get a sample of our most popular college ruled (lined) version but our ReWrite are available in case quantities in ruled, blank or quad ruled graph paper.
ReBound: Make your presentation a game winner -- go for the ReBound. Document Finishing supplies have been limited to plastic and non recycled paper options. ReBound's clear cover looks, feels and performs like plastic but it's made from plants! ReBound can be used with any comb or coil binding system and comes with a clear PLA cover and a 20 point recycled FSC Certified chipboard back. It's the perfect solution for proposals or LEED proposals.
* Rebinder's Chipboard/Bending Chip: 100% Recycled / Minimum of 85% Post Consumer Recycled Fibers, FSC Certified and fully recyclable end of life.
* Rebinder's Corrugated Cardboard: 70% Recycled (at least 40% Post Consumer Recycled) and fully recyclable end of life.
* Rebinder's PLA (Poly Lactic Acid): Clear sheet made from plants, not from plastic. Certified Compostable by ASTM D6400 Standards.
The CD Sleeves are going to come in handy when I travel, since I've gotten rid of the jewel cases and put my cds into binders - they will protect my cds from the elements without adding too much bulk!
The thing that astounded me most is that the clear sheets and ReBadge samples weren't plastic at all - they're plant based and can be composted - how cool is that!
I would have loved to try one of their larger recycled notebooks, because the ReWrite Mini was co cute and useful.
I really appreciate the fact that ReBinder has put so much thought into creating a working solution for those who want to have a sustainable office and leave less of a carbon footprint while still being organized and productive!  The only concern I have is that you currently have to order in bulk, and I'm not sure what my little home based blog business would do with 75 presentation folders right now...

Friday Fragments

Mommy's Idea

I am hooking up this fragmented post at Half-past kissin' time...

I played with a nook color for the first time today... it's almost perfect... except for the price... that's a lot of books I can buy for the cost.. but darn, I could carry hundreds of books at a time and never be without something to read...

The scariest thing is that the person whose Nook I borrowed to play with was a middle school friend of my daughter's... guess what she wants next too...

Liam has been making excellent progress at school - he's started to imitate frequently, which is helping with his vocabulary building and also making choices.  He's even started to respond to simple abstract setences... which is a huge jump cognitively for him... and I'm such a proud mommy.

I'm so excited... one more week and I'll be completely shattering my nutritious meals credo with a trip to the Charleston Wine and Food festival... Wayne does all their surveys and data analysis, so I get to go to the opening tasting on a sponsor's ticket... I'm only doing the one event this year, but the tasting tents are the best and yummies places to be!

The other great part of that is that no children are allowed... darn, going to have to leave Erik with Wayne while I go and check out the latest and greatest... nearly two hours of uninterrupted me time... well, interrupted by the clinking of wineglasses and the crunching of yummy delicacies...

My exciting trip today was to take the kids to the mall so that Liam could hang out in the model train area... the mall has actually given space to the local model railway club and they open to the public a few days a week!  Liam was in heaven and Erik slept right through... Robyn went off to shop...

Robyn's exciting news is that she's going to be featured, along with the rest of the Haut Gap news team, on Low Country Live, a local tv program!  It should be fun!

As for Erik, he has his 4 mos check up next week, so we'll see if he's a butterball or some other cut or style of poultry.. stay tuned ;)

As for me, I only got 4 hours sleep last night, so this blog post might not be *actually probably isn't actually making any sense...

That's how fragmented my life is latey... if yours is the same, or better or worse... you should hook up with your fragments here:
Mommy's Idea
Good night all!

Five Question Friday

You wanna know a little more about me... i knew that ... so I hooked up with Five Question Friday again... just so you'd know the answers to these five questions... you can share by clicking on the button and linking up, or just leaving your answer to one of them in the comments :)
Here are this week's questions:

1. Can you drive a stick shift?

2. What are two foods you just can't eat?

3. Do you buy Girl Scout Cookies? What is your favorite kind?

4. How do you pamper yourself?

5. What is your nickname and how did you get it?

My Answers:
1. Can you drive a stick shift?
I'm sure I can, but I've never tried ;)

2. What are two foods you just can't eat?
Chocolate and coffee.. I'm allergic to both

3. Do you buy Girl Scout Cookies? What is your favorite kind?
Yes, I'm a fan of the lemon ones...

4. How do you pamper yourself?
I try to get at least 6 hours sleep ;)  A hot shower or a hot bath with the bathroom door locked, or a solo trip to the grocery store are all pampering these days.  I'm a simple girl with simple needs.

5. What is your nickname and how did you get it?
My nickname is Bunny, my husband gave it to me based on the M.Y.T.H. Series of books by Robert Asprin.  Bunny was a character who at first appeared to be just window dressing, but actually was incredibly intelligent and street-wise, so I appreciate the nickname.

If you enjoyed my answers, you should click through on the button to read more!

Thursday Bonus and thoughts

I get the comics sent to my email every day... I don't often get through them all, but I have to say that I love Baby Blues and the majority of comics I save are little pearls like the one above.

I love that Erik is growing up, and meeting new milestones head on, but he's my last baby and I'm also trying to savor the little baby things... it just seems to be going so much faster!

So today's bonus entry is: Slow Down, You Move too Fast!

It's good for ONE entry into any ONE giveaway and is good until 11:59 PM EST February 23rd!

Does anyone have suggestions for keeping Erik from growing up?

Thirsty For Comments Thursday - link your fave posts

Acting Balanced

Welcome to the Thirsty for Comments Thursday blog hop!

What is it?

I've spent several posts ranting about blog hoppers who 'hit and run' to collect followers and numbers - That's not why I join blog hop memes, and I know from comments left on those rants, that others feel the same way... so I've decided to do something proactive and create Thirsty for Comments Thursdays!

This week's featured blog is:

Lisa's World of Books

____________________________________________________________________________
The rules are simple -

1. Link up a SPECIFIC POST (NOT just your blog URL) that you'd like to have more comments on -
can be anything EXCEPT GIVEAWAYS and OTHER BLOG HOPS - they will be deleted
2. Add the Thirsty for Comments Thursday button to the post if you like - you can grab it from my sidebar --)
3. Visit AT LEAST two other blogs and READ the posts and comment thoughtfully on the post.
4. Follow the blog if you like, but it's not required... this hop is all about giving good comment!

Extras:
I would love it if you follow Acting Balanced so that you get reminders to link up posts every week...
but you don't have to do that either.
Create a new post to help spread the word about Thirsty for Comments Thursdays to your followers who like to leave good comment, again - not required, but sharing is wonderful :)
Please leave feedback about what you think of this Meme idea.
Any and all constructive feedback is welcome!
