Book Blogger Hop

I'm participating in Crazy-For-Books' Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop I'm not a traditional book blogger - but I regularly host authors as guest posters and write reviews, so at least part of my time is devoted to book blogging ...

Here's a link to my past reviews

Crazy-For-Books has a question to answer which is:

"How do you spread the word about your blog?
(e.g. Social Networking sites, Book Blog Directories, comments on other blogs...)"

Yep, I use all of the above - facebook, twitter, commenting on other blogs, directories of all sorts and hops like this one :)

Friday Fragments

Some updates:

Ach Baby has dropped and expanded... my belly is HUGE and now low... I have just over 5 weeks to go and if this kid keeps trying to expand his real estate holdings, I may just end up with an outie...

I have my 5 week dr appt on Monday with my first internal... I am hoping everything goes well, because it's a busy week!

One of my lovely friends has planned a little baby shower for Ach Baby on Saturday morning - should be fun!

Robyn's ticket is booked for her first flight without us... still debating about whether to get the unaccompanied minor service... it's not required, but might be helpful - anyone have suggestions?   She's twelve and very mature for her age, has flown with me several times and knows the routine of both the airports she needs to go through... I know she'll just sit on her laptop with the itunes cranked or reading a book... but as a mom, I worry...

As for Liam, he's seriously getting the concrete words, spelling and numeracy, but is still struggling with social language... it's to be expected but as a mom, I'm looking forward to the day he starts having conversations...
He did really well today making eye contact though, so it's a step in the right direction :)

I'm getting more excited about the baby-pregnancy-new mommy celebration at the end of October - I'll have some new sponsors to announce later today (Friday) that will be part of either reviews or giveaways or both during the week of October 20-27th!!!
I won't be posting as much for the next week or so - it's a busy time at Robyn's school - I'm in charge of the book fair... and it's an all consuming thing, but should be fun!   I plan to try to sit with my feet up as much as possible - there are some other great volunteers helping out!

That's it for now - hope everyone else has had a great week and I look forward to reading your Friday Fragments!

Oh yeah... by the way - I launched a new meme yesterday called Thirsty for Comments Thursday - if you missed it last week, be sure to follow my blog for a reminder to link up!

Only 2 hours left to enter...

5 Question Friday

1. Did you have a pen pal when you were little (or now)? Where were/are they from?

Nope, no penpal.. but lots of internet friends from various places that I keep up with on IM, facebook and my blog.

2. If you could do a different job for one day, what would it be?

I think I would love to try out being a book store owner...all those fab books!

3. Do you remember your biggest fear from when you were little?

Fire, for the longest time... that our house would burn down... and then we went on a trip to Niagara Falls and I climbed Brock's Monument with my family and got separated from them... it was a narrow, winding staircase and it was incredibly crowded... from that day forward, I've had an abject fear of falling and spiral staircases.

4. What do you think is a waste of time? Why?

People who can't count to ten at the grocery store and try to go through the express lines... I got behind someone the other day who not only had over twenty items in the 10 items or less aisle, but she also had to write a cheque and couldn't find her glasses to do it... nuff said?

5. What is the oldest item you have in your closet?

Probably my wedding dress, but it's boxed and tucked up in a corner

New Meme - Thirsty for Comments Thursdays

Acting Balanced

Welcome to the Inaugural
Thirsty for Comments Thursday blog hop!

What is it?

I've spent several posts ranting about blog hoppers who 'hit and run' to collect followers and numbers - That's not why I join blog hop memes, and I know from comments left on those rants, that others feel the same way... so I've decided to do something proactive and create Thirsty for Comments Thursdays!  This is a laid back meme designed to get meaningful and heartfelt feedback from people who will actually take the time to read your post!

The rules are simple -

1. Link up a post that you'd like to have more comments on - can be anything!
Add the Thirsty for Comments Thursday button to the post if you like - you can grab it from my sidebar --)
2. Visit at least two other blogs and READ the posts and comment thoughtfully on the post.
3. Follow the blog if you like, but it's not required... this hop is all about giving good comment!
4. I would love it if you follow Acting Balanced so that you get reminders to link up posts every week... but you don't have to do that either.
5. Create a new post to help spread the word about Thirsty for Comments Thursdays to your followers who like to leave good comment, again - not required, but sharing is wonderful :)
6. Leave feedback about what you think of this Meme idea.  Any and all constructive feedback is welcome!

The Bonus:
Anyone who creates a new post and leaves me a comment about it will be entered to become a co-host of this meme next week.

Happy Commenting!

Book Review - Juliet by Anne Fortier

I was lucky enough to be chosen by Pump Up Your Book promotions to receive a copy fo Anne Fortier's new novel Juliet that hit bookstores August 24th...  This book combines history, literature, suspense and a treasure hunt across Italy and time.  It's a gripping novel that pairs Juliet Jacobs, a nondescript drama teacher from the U.S. with a family legacy that stretches back to Guilietta, the ancestor who inspired the famed tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.

From the Publisher:

Juliet, an ambitious, utterly engaging historical novel on the scale of The Thirteenth Tale and The Birth of Venus, follows a young woman who discovers that her family’s origins reach all the way back to literature’s greatest star-crossed lovers.
When Julie Jacobs inherits a key to a safety-deposit box in Siena, Italy, she is told it will lead her to an old family treasure. Soon she is launched on a winding and perilous journey into the history of her ancestor Giulietta, whose legendary love for a young man named Romeo rocked the foundations of medieval Siena. As Julie crosses paths with the descendants of the families involved in Shakespeare’s unforgettable blood feud, she begins to realize that the notorious curse—“A plague on both your houses!”—is still at work, and that she is the next target. It seems that the only one who can save Julie from her fate is Romeo—but where is he?

My review:

I love that this book is a work of historical fiction that is well researched and uses documented historical facts to bring the story to life... The intertwining of the stories of the Medieval Giulietta and modern Juliet show us how history can be repeated, but also altered by space, time and modernization.

I love how references to various versions of the Romeo and Juliet story are used to give clues and lead the reader down the path of both enlightenment and entanglement.  I also love how the passage of time has both altered and obscured some of the realities we see emerging.

Fortier's characterizations and settings are brought to life with careful wording and beautiful prose.  As a debut novel, one often expects that words might not flow off the page as richly as practiced authors, but if someone hadn't told me this was a first novel, I would never have known.

I recommend this book for anyone who loves history, Romeo & Juliet, intrigue and Italy!  It is currently on sale at Amazon.com for $16.50 ($8.50 off the cover price) and in a Kindle Version for $9.99.

About the Author:

Anne Fortier grew up in Denmark and emigrated to the United States in 2002 to work in film. She co-produced the Emmy-winning documentary Fire and Ice: The Winter War of Finland and Russia and holds a Ph.D. in the History of Ideas from Aarhus University in Denmark. The story of Juliet was inspired by Anne Fortier’s mother, who always considered Verona her true home … until she discovered Siena. You can visit Anne Fortier’s website at www.julietbook.com.

Book/CD Review & Giveaway - The Nutria Frog Kingdom (childrens)

The Nutria Frog Kingdom is a children's story with a message.  Set in the swamps of Louisiana, the story follows two children on an adventure to meet King Leo of the Nutria Frogs...

It is written by Bayou Castaine Bennett and illustrated by Pui Choi Lam, Caleb Johnson, Randy Volant, Alvin Forrest, Brian Cannady and Arian Delpha

From the Publisher:
Based on original lyrics by Washboard Leo Thomas from the "Nutria-Frog Story" album.

My review:

This book offers kids a whimsical and imaginative look at serious environmental problems - pollution and lack of conservation for swamps and other natural resources.  From the music to the book, children can blend their imaginations with serious discussions about recycling, water conservation and energy conservation.

The Nutria Frogs - a very special 'new species' illustrate just how important a specific eco-system can be for the survival of special animals.

Once the story closes, it doesn't end there - there are several activities that engage the children in thoughtful ways of conservation - one of them asks the kids to think of five things they can do in their own town to help improve the environment and the magical Nutria-Frog kingdom, and another asks them to draw themselves unplugging cell phones, lights and TV's when it is safe and no one is using them....

The story was a little complicated for my son who is 4 and has some delays, but he loved the music and the illustrations - I would recommend this book for children 6-9, and the CD is a great tie in for younger children. It would be a great way to introduce conservation and environmentalism to a classroom!

You can enjoy and purchase your own copy of "The Nutria Frog Kingdom" book and CD for only $17.99 on the book’s Facebook page or from the Nutria Frog Kingdom website.

One lucky Acting Balanced follower will win their own copy of The Nutria Frog Kingdom.  This giveaway will end on October 6th, 2010 at 11:59 pm and the winner - chosen by random.org - will be announced on October 7th

A New Way to Play

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of PlayStation(R) Move. All opinions are 100% mine.

Taking gaming to the next level, PlayStation has brought out their own full range of motion,  handheld controllers called PlayStation(R)MOVE.  Compatible with the PlayStation®3, the PlayStation(R)MOVE offers a new level of gaming for Playstation fans!

Ergonomically designed, and easy to install, if a little genie appeared an offered our family the PlayStation(R)MOVE, I could see us expanding our game play and really getting into games on a whole new level!

PS games are now marked either PlayStation(R)MOVE required or compatible (meaning they could be used with original controllers). it opens up a whole new world of games, including some that I think our family would enjoy: Sorcery, Sports Champion, Get Fit with Mel B and EyePet in the required category and Brunswick Bowling and Little Big Planet.  Whether you’re experienced, casual, or somewhere in between, PlayStation®Move has a wide variety of games including sports, action, party, family, and shooters. The games are addictively fun and the outcome of every move is all under your control.

It's great for younger children because the movements required are more natural than typical controllers and I think that Liam would love to get his hands on these new controllers!

You can bring motion gaming exclusively to your existing PlayStation®3 for only $99 with the MOVE bundle package!

Product Review and Giveaway - Diamondearrings.org

"This is a Mama Buzz review. The product was provided by diamondearrings.org for this review."

I love jewelry, but lately I've been really lazy about putting myself together - darn 7 months pregnant and tired body... but I have to say that every outfit I've worn lately has been accented beautifully by a pair of simulated diamond earrings from diamondearrings.org

These earrings are sweet, petite and go with everything! They are 5mm studs - Cubic Zirconia and .925 sterling silver and come in a pretty little heart shaped box...  I sometimes have difficulty wearing earrings but when I found out these were set in sterling silver, I knew they could become my don't-need-to-think-about-it go to pair... which is exactly what I need at this stage in my pregnancy!

My daughter loves them too - the size doesn't overwhelm her little ears and they look just as spectacular on my tween as they do on me!

My only disappointment is that the butterfly on the back of the earring is small and sometimes I feel like they aren't as secure as I'd like... but I haven't lost one yet, so maybe it's just the way they sit on my ears...  The post length is a little shorter than an average earring, so that may contribute to the feeling as well... but as I said, I haven't lost one yet :)

I've received a ton of compliments on them, including one from my new hairdresser!

The best part is that everyone in the US can get a pair FREE - all it costs is $3.77 shipping and handling and a mention on social media or in your blog and you will have your own pair of lovely simulated diamond earrings that look like this:

And, even better - if you want to get them truly free, I'm giving away a pair here on Acting Balanced and that pair will ship FREE including shipping to anywhere in the USA!

All you need to do is comment here on this post, and tell me what you would wear your new 'diamonds' with or where you would wear them... simple, eh!

The giveaway will end on October 5th at 11:59pm EST and the  winner will be announced on October 6th!

Mandatory Entry: Leave a comment about either what you would wear your new earrings with,
or where you would wear them.

MMMmonday - Review, Recipes and Linky

I am so excited about today's MMMmonday Cookbook review - Desserts 4 Today: Flavorful Desserts with Just Four Ingredients, because all of the recipes that I've tried so far are yummy, easy to follow and fabulous with just four ingredients!  Plus, there are a number of recipes in this one that are naturally gluten-free!

Desserts 4 Today: Flavorful Desserts with Just Four Ingredients From the Publisher:

Today’s home cooks want simplicity in the kitchen, especially when it comes to desserts. For this book, consummate cook and teacher Abigail Johnson Dodge has developed an extraordinary collection of sophisticated, yet easy-to-make sweets—using just four ingredients—that offer a depth of flavor that belie their simplicity. There are no difficult-to-master techniques here, no hours of prep work required; each of the 125 flavorful desserts uses mostly simple pantry ingredients and is ready from start to finish in about 30 minutes. Each recipe includes flavor variations and substitutions, as well as dress-up options. Cooks of all skill levels will delight in everything sweet—from cookies to mouthwatering creamy, frozen, and pastry desserts.

My review:

This cookbook has a beautiful layout - beginning with a section with hints, items to keep in your pantry and cooking equipment, Desserts 4 Today: Flavorful Desserts with Just Four Ingredients then launches into such delectable chapters as Cookies, Creamy Desserts, Frozen Desserts, Fruit Desserts and Pastry Desserts.  The finale is a section of yummy add-ons like Double Whole Berry Sauce, Boozy Hard Sauce and Chocolate Drizzle or Coating.

I love the bright and colorful photographs that are simple and elegant and the fact that most recipes come with ways to change them up or some easy add-ons to spice up the basic recipe or add garnish.  I also love that the ingredients are listed first, followed by the amounts so you can quickly scan to see if you have everything you need for a specific recipe.

Some of my favorite recipes are:

Oatmeal-Cinnamon Crisps - makes 8 cookies

Ingredients:
Unsalted Butter, 2 tablespoons, melted
Brown Sugar, 1/4 cup, firmly packed
Ground Cinnamon, 1/4 tsp
Old Fashioned Rolled Oats, 2/3 cup

Method:
1. Heat the oven to 350F.  Line one cookie sheet with a non-stick liner (I used parchment paper)
2. Put the butter in a small bowl.  Add the sugar and cinnamon.  Stir until well blended.  Add the oats.  Using a rubber spatula, stir and smear the ingredients together until the oats are moistened and the sugar is evenly distributed.  The mixture will be crumbly.
3. Using a tablespoon measure, scoop up crumbs and press firmly into the measure.  Arrange on the prepared cookie sheet, about 1 1/2 inches apart.  Using a small offset spatula, flatten each mound into a 2 inch round, gently sliding any stray crumbs back into the round.
4. Bake until oats are golden, 12 minutes. Let the cookies sit for 5 minutes and then transfer to a rack to cool completely.  Serve immediately or store at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Switch ins:
In place of the ground cinnamon, switch in the following: ground ginger, 1/4 tsp
In place of the Old fashioned Rolled Oats, switch in the following: instant, unflavored oats, 2/3 cup

Gussy it up:
Serve warm cookies with diced ripe pears and Boozy Hard Sauce or vanilla ice cream

Spiced Mango Whip - serves 4

mangos, medium, ripe, 2 (14 oz each), halved and pitted
brown sugar, 1/3 cup, firmly packed
ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp
heavy cream, 1 cup

Method:
1. Have ready 4 serving bowls or cups and make room in the fridge
2. Cut the flesh of each mango half into 1 inch crosshatch, without piercing the skin.  Push up from the skin side (it will look like a porcupine) and cut away the mango from the skin.
3. Pile the mango into a food processor and add the brown sugar and cinnamon.  Process until smooth, about 1 minute.  Taste and add more sugar or cinnamon, if needed.
4. Put the heavy cream in a medium bowl.  Beat with an electric mixer until firm peaks form when the beaters are lifted.  (Don't forget to stop the mixer before lifting)
5. Add about 2/3 of the puree to the whipped cream.  Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in until well blended.  Add the remaining puree and fold in just until some mango puree streaks are visible.   Spoon the mixture into the bowls.  Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve or for up to 2 days.

Switch ins
In place of brown sugar, switch in the following: granulated sugar, 1/3 cup
In place of cinnamon, switch in one of the following:

  • fresh mint leaves, finely chopped, 1 tbsp
  • lime zest, finely grated, 1 tsp
  • fresh ginger, finely grated, 1 tsp
  • orange zest, finely grated 1 tsp
Gussy it up
Serve in a fun glass stemware glass for a festive look
It's a parfait, layer the whip with fresh fruit (small mango chunks, kiwis, berries)
You can even layer in crushed crisp cookies (gingersnaps, chocolate wafers, amaretto)

I didn't try any of the chocolate recipes, because of my allergies, nor did I test out some of the yummy sounding adult desserts made with alcohol, but even so - everything I tried was yummy and fairly easy to make!

One of the chocolate recipes that looked both yummy and easy was:

I highly recommend checking out Desserts 4 Today: Flavorful Desserts with Just Four Ingredients and adding it to your collection!
